    I wasn't doin' nothin', anyway
Just what is it that I'm supposed to have done?

With bloodshot eyes and bleedin' hands
I hit my engine with the steam cleaner again
I took the first bus, I didn't look back
Coolant blowing out' like a whales back,
Hair fallin' out as the wind blows through it
My TD5s back to 2nd, just like I knew it would
    Overflowin' Coolant, yeah

    Oh yeah
    Then that Tombie said

Better get a Head Gasket, son
You better get a real good one......

Well this is a fascinating and helpful? thread so far.

I changed my VC bearing yesterday as it was making a horrendoius noise, but I don't think it had seized as the belt was OK and the writing on the flat side was still there. I guess it didn't help though.

Can anyone confirm the protocol for the aircon fan to come on? I have read all the RAVE stuff about 28C , but there is no statement as to whether it comes on with the compressor. I think it should but it doesn't. I guess I will just have to troubleshoot it.

Just to be clear on water loss . The reason that I didn't know the exact temp was that my digital gauge gave up.
After I lost a bit of water , which was just down under the full mark so about 100CC, I connected the Nanocom in instrument mode and made sure the temperature was sub 100C up the Alpine way and guessed up Mt Keira. There was no water loss over this stretch at all so I am pretty comfortable about the head gasket.
    Regards Philip A

Glad your comfortable. Review of TD5 mods and request for info

So am I... Review of TD5 mods and request for info

Believe what you will, your Head Gasket is starting to let go... it may take weeks or months to become more serious, but it is failing.

The engine will NOT bleed coolant from the bottle if there isn't abnormal pressure in the tank..

I would suggest that you have an issue with your cooling system and your ECU map is not ideal - or perhaps one issue is a side effect of the other.

Whilst I recognise that Tasmania is much colder, it's 32*C here today and my vehicle has no issues with heating. I am running TD5, TD5Inside remap, BAS Turbo Tecnics VNT, ceramic coating exhaust manifold, AliveTuning Serk intercooler and free flowing 2.5" exhaust pushing a vehicle with a lot of extra weight from various accessories and larger tyres (33"). The automatic transmission has a Ashcroft HD torque converter and I fitted a second fluid cooler. I have no heating issues with my coolant and my EGT are easily manageable.

The original ECU map that I had caused high EGT and black smoke. Since working with TD5Inside to adjust it and customise for the vehicle it is significantly better and EGT are no longer an issue. Obviously I can't drive with a flat foot for long periods of time up a hill - this would of course result in high EGT, but I can comfortably maintain high throttle on a long hill whilst keeping the EGT in a safe zone.

I'm not sure what to suggest re your cooling system (the above posts are probably correct though regarding the head gasket being on it's way out), but I certainly suggest looking at having a custom remap done to suit your vehicle. Personally, I recommend TD5Inside as he adjusts the map to suit your needs and will make further adjustments later when/if you do other modifications.

I don't have a real problem unless I am towing my approx 900-1000Kg camper trailer up hills etc or low range on a hot day.
I will keep an eye on the head gasket but apart from the recent loss , it hasn't used any water for about 3 years, but then it was not modded for most of that time.
I usually fill to the seam. It was only a few days ago that I saw the little tag that denotes the cold water level about 13mm Below the seam.
I will also have a look at the electric fan as a first step.
    Regards Philip A.

Usually happens when people fiddle with things, trying to reinvent the wheel
