D2 bonnet repair possible or replacement ????

Had an incident yesterday giving the D2 some much needed loving (polish and wax) which required removal of my full length oval tradesman roof rack.

My son was lifting one side lost his balance when we were removing the rack and dropped it on the bonnet

End result two big bents, a lot of paint scrape.

My question is one of the dents where to foot of the roof rack hit has actually pounced a tear about 10 mm long thought the skin. Presuming the bonnet is alloy by the looks of the metal underneath.

Can it be welded and repaired or am I looking at a replacement bonnet?

Polish and wax was finished and roof rack reinstalled without further incident. Had two more bodies assisting with reinstalling the roof rack this time.

    Cheers, Chris

Someone who works in alloy fab will be able to fix it and make it invisible, then a touch up paint mob could colour it. Marine fab guys are more often working in alloy welding than car guys. Consider that those who do repair alloy bodied cars are also working on high end stuff so charge high end prices.

There are several people on this forum wrecking D2s, and the bonnet is probably not going to be an item in high demand, so a S/H one may be the best option, even factoring in the cost of repainting it.

    Hi Chris,
Rimmer's in the UK sell genuine bonnets for $843.03 plus freight (which could be the killer). No duty as under $1000. Plus the cost of paint could make it an expensive fix.

    Thanks every one,

    Some ideas to ponder.

As Darwin is probably the tinny capital of Australia I mite be able to. Find some one to do a repair possibly, if not will probably source a second hand one hopefully even the same colour.

    Cheers Chris

Inner braces steel I think. Outer skin must be alloy as L plates don't stick to it. Heavier bonnet than D1 and I had thought I read they went to steel but don't think they did.

A 10mm slit once dollied flat would be of no consquence whether steel or aluminum. You wouldnt want to risk warping with heat of welding.
Repair would be same as steel panel with maybe chemical hole repair.

I have a few in various colours here in my parts collection - shipping cost to Darwin will not be cheap however. They don't weigh much (about 18kg) but the size pushes up the shipping cost.
