Transmission Temperature

Had a similar problem with mine.
Felt i lost drive going down a hill in the freeway. Looked in the mirror to see oil all over the rear screen. Hose had come off and was an easy fix. BUT not long before i could feel a bit of slip in the transmission and so the damage was done. That was with new oil/filter before and after the problem.
Had the transmission rebuilt and also had a new set of hoses custom made by Enzed so it doesn't happen again.
Not to be rude but what is the car worth? A rebuild and new hoses was near 6K and at your km ........:(

not sure what the vehicle is worth, but I have done quite a few mods and work on the car and I know it pretty much inside and out.
Have thought of going up to a D3 or D4 on a few occasions but I spend quite a lot of time in fairly remote areas and if something goes wrong you need to be able to fix it yourself to be able to get yourself out. :(
I'm sure the D3 and D4 are great vehicles but I have heard of a lot of horror stories particularly with D3 (crankshafts and an endless money pit) and just too much electronics in the D4 to allow you to fix things when remote. I thinks its a bit of 'the devil you know'.
It may well be worth spending the money to overhaul the transmission because it will probably last another couple of hundred thousand Km's :p
I think overall, if you maintain the Disco properly and drive carefully, it is generally a reliable and capable vehicle. Sure, it has its faults, but if you have a good look around at other comparable vehicles and their associated faults and repair costs ... I think the D2 is quite a good unit.
My Disco has been towing, on a full time basis, a 3 tonne van around Australia, and through some pretty rugged areas at that, since 2010 and hasn't really missed a beat..... so even though its a right pain now, I probably can't complain too much. :cool:

On our recent trip to WA towing our 2.6 tonne van we got as far as Barn Hill Station before we started to loose drive. by the time we got to Broome and unhitched. A rapid acceleration test ended all hope an we towed it to a workshop.

The good part.
I had a reco trans from Barbagallows via WEST COAST ROVER:clap2::BigThumb: Fantastic service. in 4 days in Broome $3600.

The bad stuff.
The mechanics did not align the converter into the pump upon reassembly, destroyed trans, back out :mad:
3 weeks later and $6500 we left Broome with a leaking Transfercase due to poor handling by the mechanic damaging the seal. Now rectified.

I did fit a Trans cooler and it is the best choice to make if you tow heavy in hot conditions. Oil now stays perfectly red no matter how hard I drive it.

I would have no issues with fitting a larger trans cooler except for the fact that I have always run cool temps with the existing one... in fact, too cool according to what Ashcrofts says. They say 80C - 94C is the normal range.:o

There is a saying in Broome;

Only paid for the original R&R.
Plus $50/day caravan park fees and car hire.
