I suspect bits from the radiator manufacturing process but also slight incompatibilities I'm coolant type even after flushing. I suspect it's a whole host of little bits of crap that build up. Definitely better to capture and remove anyway.
Pedro what temps do you get in stop start traffic on 34 to 35 degree days like this. Say 60kph roads but stopping regularly at lights and for traffic pile ups etc?

From Ipswich way to Redlands 31 degree heat and 82 to 84 highway and 84 to 85 in that stop start at Oxley and at lights throughout Mt Gravat. Pretty sweet.

Anything over 80 is ok I reckon,, I dont think I'd want to run under 80,,
Just reporting in. I really like this mod for summer at least. I was running on largely flat and slightly undulating terrain at 70kph in 35 degree heat and it sat on 81 degrees. That really is a significantly better temp for these motors in my view. The sudden influx of cooler water referred to above happens one occasional only during a drive cycle (warm up) in summer and it is not cool water per second with 2 bleed holes...warm/hot as judged by bottom radiator hose temp before thermostat cracks.
Winter might require an 82 or 87 degree stat with only one bleed hole. We will see. Very easy to change and very minimal coolant loss on changeover.

Where did you get the filter Scott and what size?
Hi mate. Had it for many years. Ring the designer and owner at TEFBA filters down south. I can't recall size. Just measure a hose and give that measurement to them mate. Cheers

Was looking to replace the plastic crap in my D2 td5 as have broken the over flow pipe and the screw holding the cowing is leaking, have temp fixed both but want to replace with something good!
Temps are running around 88 to 89 measured after driving with the engine at idle using a thermometer in the overflow tank.
Haven't had the car long and am miffed about the temp gauge not changing when temps change!! So not 100% on actual loaded running temps.
Going to start towing a van and wanted the cooling system A1 before this.
I don't think landrovers are the only ones that show this.Quote:

Temp gauge showed pretty normal while the engine was cooking under load uphill, and by the time the gauge showed it was rising, steam already coming out from under the bonnet! and just as we popped the bonnet on the side of the Hume Fwy, a hose then popped off.
He had all of about 1 min from the point where the temp gauge starting to climb... to slow down from 100.. to pop the bonnet... to watching the hose pop off!
From that point on, it was slow trip stopping every few mins to double check the hose holding up, and cool things down.
In the end, before we hit the half way point, I towed the trailer for him up there, but his Patrol still overheated at every opportunity.
He was much more vigilant with the temp gauge tho .. maybe over cautious.

I have no idea about the D2/TD5 rads, but I looked on their site for a 300 Tdi rad, and to me they look exactly like the Chinese aluminium rads you can easily find on ebay.
So, now with my speculation hat on, I'd say that they source their cheapish Al rads from China.
