I think I should have said a Donaldson pre filter, on top of the snorkel. Do you know if they are effective? cheers.

Interesting you say that about the air filter box. Everytime I replace my filter, I feel that I'm missing a clip or something. It just doesnt seem to seal well. But looking at it, I think its as good as its going to get. Anyone else have this problem? I might try that grease idea thanks
Yep. Feed a green flat rubber occy type strap under and over box. The stral9 with multiple holes to tighten. Cheers
I've also used a K & N filter before. I used it in my 4lt BA XR6. I noticed a marginal increase in throttle response and no difference in acceleration. I can speak from experience when it come to rebuilding a dusted TD5. I believe it was mostly due to the duck bill, poor sealing on the lid of the air box, air intake from inner guard and the fact the filter doesn't take long to saturate full of dust.
I'm too scared to use anything other than high quality paper air filters with a rib down the centre for extra support Mann and Mahle filters have this, Coopers don't. Due to the air box design I personally feel it necessary.
I 4WD a lot and am around plenty of dust. I replace the air filter every service because it is cheaper, faster and less inconvenient than rebuilding a TD5.
Since fitting a snorkel the only issue I've had with air flow is the MAF reading high due to air flow, to the point I've faced the snorkel intake backwards to solve the issue. So flow through the paper filter isn't an issue.
I don't doubt sierrafery for a minute, his pressure measurement results are not surprising
But personally the only reason I think it could be argued a K&N is a 'better' filter choice is if you are constantly driving in highly humid environments, I mean very high humidity. Perhaps lots of river crossings, however you should be using a snorkel anyway. The oil in the filter will not allow water to pass through the filter, unless of course it is coming out the end of a tap, even then it doesn't pass through too easy.
