before installing your K&N bird cage you should.........

check out the thread that was done comparing a bunch of filters and how the stock filter did compared to K&N and identify the sarcasm levels regarding the K&N performance as a filter intended to be implied by referring to it as a bird cage.

I know not of the comparison referred to above, but I run one and have no issues with it at all. The intake pipe post the air filter box is clean, the filter is washed and recoiled every 10,000km and seems to be doing the expected job just fine.

    Air Filter Tests (Finally)

you can keep your birdcage, but I kinda like filters so will stick with a donaldson, oem or delco.

It seems filters 'aint filters, I guess . I'm using MANN air filters atm., Thinking of matching that up with a Donaldson filter. Haven't been out in the dust for a while, hopefully soon.

I used to run K&N. Haven't for a long time as I was concerned about filtering ability versus paper. Whatever you use make sure if a good seal around top of air box. Cheers

I'm still on K&N after 8 years of continuous usage and i'm not concerned at all, those scientific tests are irrelevant for me cos at the dimension and weight of the greatest particles that can pass through any filter they are all instantly disintegrated in the combustion and blown through the exhaust... as about H20, as long as there are water injection systems for diesels i dont see an issue... i made only one test on the same road and same speed comparing a mann paper filter with the K&N and the AAP drop was almost zero, MAF slightly higher and EGT lower with the K&N which means more efficient combustion and that's more important IMO than some particles dimension which are vanishing instantly as they enter in the combustion chamber.

also if the K&N is carefully serviced and not overoiled the theory that it ruins the MAF is also false...as about costs, a K&N service kit can be used 10 times and that's cheaper than 10 good brand paper filters so IMHO there is no argument against them, i'll keep using it without fear on my own vehicle

I think this is a matter of "horses for courses"

In Europe with hardly a dirt road a K&N would probably be fine.

In Australia I wouldn't like to be following a road train on a dirt track for a few hundred Ks with a K&N.
When in this situation I use an oiled foam Unifilter sleeve in the snorkel head as well as a stock filter. The sleeve will block up in a couple of days .

I used to use K&N on a RRC (until I read the comparison) and had no problem with the MAF . AFAIK the MAF thing only applies to a 14CUX MAF as they had no "burn off" cycle on shut off. I don't know about later ones.

    I use both.
When traveling on the black top I use the K&N and when on the dirt for any length of time I will change over to the standard paper filter.

Julian Edgar from the now defunct Autospeed site did tests on the pressure drop of standard vs sports type filters and found almost no pressure drop from stock filters. The tests are still there if you want to dig a bit.

His conclusion was that sports filters were a waste of money and that most pressure drop in many circumstances more more due to the shape and size of the filter box and its entry and exit points..

I used some of his techniques to test the pressure drop of a snorkel on a 3.9 RRC and found only 12 inches of water in the whole system from snorkel mouth to after the filter.
BTW the ram effect at 80Kmh was also about 1-2 inches of water ie negligible.
    Regards Philip A
