    ZF4HP22 Repair Recommendations (Perth)

    hi all,
looks like I might have to bite the bullet and have the ZF box in my 2001 Disco TD5 repaired.
Have had some lengthy discussions with auto repairers and received a wide variation in repair options.. ranging from a "freshen up" ie. new clutch pack, 'O' rings and seals to a complete overhaul. Estimated prices from $2600 to $6000 !!.
The vehicle is now at 268,000km and has been used for towing a nearly 3 tonne caravan for the last 6 years (without any issues... other than a higher EGT than I would like at times ) Over this time, I have done regular fluid changes (with good quality fluids) and when servicing the transmission, have been mindful of any debris in the old oil or on the magnet and there has never been any... apart from the usual fine 'powdery' collection on the magnet. This leeds me to believe that there has not been any serious damage to the hard parts ie. planetary gear, etc. and therefore I don't need to have a full overhaul.
I would probably be happy with a full overhaul if I new that the repairer was indeed replacing all the hard parts... but I'm pretty sure if they find parts to be ok, that they will be inclined to put them back in and still charge for a new part without me knowing. In the end, I might just find myself having a "freshen up" and yet paying for a full overhaul.
I have watched a video of Ashcroft's rebuilding process and they will re-use parts that they deem to be ok.

Can any members advise recommendations as to who best to use in the Perth region ... and conversely... who to stay away from.
I'm looking for someone who knows what they are doing, will do a good job and not try to fleece me in the process.

Transmissions R Us in Balcatta get good feedback. Good for D2 and D3 transmission rebuilds, but on the higher side of pricing.

thanks kelvo.... this company was one of the first I contacted, and, thinking that they are one of the 'R Us' type of franchises, thought they may have some reasonable pricing. They were in fact the 2nd highest, and once again, although the box is a changeover, how can you be sure that the hard parts of the new box are better than the old. I found with most of these places the warranty supplied is 20,000km or 12 months. This doesn't seem to be much of a warranty considering the $5000 you just spent.

12 month warranty on something you can kill inside of an hour if you know how thats rebuilt from something second hand is pretty good going.

and 20K Km is in my opinion very generous for the same reason.

as a rough guideline if it doesnt die in 5000Km or the first 3 months its not likely to.

you can also take out extended after market warranty on things in vehicles if you want to pay for the policy.

    thanks Dave.
I just noticed you're in Perth.. for some reason I always thought that you were on the east coast
Is this a job you could or would take on or would I be better off just going to a transmission specialist?
