i think i understand.
no i dont....
the BCU will intervene if the speed gets above 8km/h, which with my tyres is really 9/10kmh
i feel the limit should be more like 4km/h

In newer Discoverys it is... and you can decrease or increase speed while descending using the cruise control buttons.
I always found D2 HDC somewhere between disconcerting and down right terrifying......HDC on the new ones is a totally different beast and awesome to use.
In my manual v8 first low is great but HDC is still a nice forward facing downhill feature because when the steepness and mid hill hole combines with engine braking a wheel can skid and when that occurs HDC comes in even at very low speed.
Cheers
As others have stated the HDC on a D2 and in my manual is way too fast for my liking .
I am of the belief that is what engine braking is for .
How many times i have gone down a very long steep hill in the H/C to only to find a river or creek at the bottom.
Not a good scenario or combination for hot rotors[wink11]
If you allow the HDC to kick in before you really need it, it works very well.
If you're already on the steep slope, turn on HDC then wait for it to kick in, it will take off a bit.
I agree something slower than 7kph would be better.
On the really steep hills, engine braking is not enough; on a V8 auto with taller tyres at least.
Like all things, it takes a bit of practice.
I take your point about the sudden cooling at the bottom though.
As I was going down 16 Mile Jeep Track I switched in the HDC. It worked, but I found it to be too aggressive. no subtlety, just bang! bang! bang!. It is a much smoother ride using engine braking. I feel that you have more control.
Cheers

I dont think it has anything to do with practise , It is crap [tonguewink].
My taller tyres would play havoc as the speedo is now 10% slower[bighmmm]
Anyway even with standard height tyres it was way too fast for my liking [bigwhistle]
As in it's description from the book "HDC uses brake intervention to provide a controlled descent ability in off road conditions when engine braking is insufficient to maintain a comfortable speed" . So it was conceived to work together with engine braking not on it's own, it's a good enhancement as long as the proper gear is selected, off course that it will be "agressive" when the steepness of the hill is too much for 2'nd or 3'rd but it will help if let's say even in 1'st the descent becomes too fast
the minimum target speed is 7km/h not 8 and the BCU has nothing to do with this, it's managed by the SLABS ECU, on manual modells it's possible to insert a switch on the reverse input and if you switch this on the target speed will be 5.6km/h(not possible on autos)... i've used HDC many times and IMO it's good to have it but it's important to select the proper gear then it will kick in only when needed(not too often) otherwise it will stress you and fade out soon for brakes overheat protectionQuote:
