    V8 lifter noise?

    Hi all,
Hope this attachment works, and you can hear it ok. This engine was rebuilt over Xmas New Year period, has 4.6 flanged liner block, new cam and lifters, billet oil pump (reason for rebuild was blown oil pump) new rocker shafts and arms and only covered about 3,000 km.
Then a couple of weeks back this ticking noise started, it is intermittent, engine temp doesn't seem to make a lot of difference, seems to fade out with revs.
Plenty of power, no rough running, no faults on Nanocom, just this annoying tick that shouldn't be there. Tried a tin of LiquiMoly Stop Tappet Noise, seemed a bit of improvement, but not much. So I suspect a faulty lifter, but could there be another reason? And if it is a faulty lifter, any ideas on how to identify the faulty one as I shouldn't need to replace full set. Anyway, have necessary gaskets and a couple of new lifters on the way, then need to find time to investigate

    Thanks in advance
    Tommo

Did you check your preloads when you assembled the motor?
Supposed to be 20-50 thou. If too large it could cause the noise, or it could be a cam lobe .

Have you also checked for a leak in the exhaust manifold as they sometimes can sound uncannily like a tappet.

If it disappears with revs (ie- oil pressure) then my guess is a lifter.

I've worked my way along the bottom of the head with a large screw-driver with my ear against the handle to pin-point the culprit.

He fitted a new cam, shouldn't be worn away after so few kms

It shouldn't be making a noise agreed. I would have used aftermarket cam (Crowe/Ivan Tighe/ProCam etc) and lifters as a kit over OEM but in either case there should be a noise

I had a new aftermarket stock 3.9 cam wear down lobes within 3000Km, and it was run in properly for 20 minutes.
