Seriously. I'd take a look at why you want to lug 45kg around.

There's little need if you're running quality rubber, not old and well worn, at the right pressures and driving appropriately.

The argument that "we had 2 punctures and 2 spares" is invalid.. what if you had 3 punctures

A simple puncture is easy to fix... a quality kit and compressor covers that...

That extra 40+ kg is likely to be the reason you get a puncture.. don't carry it - and don't replace the weight saved with other stuff either

Anyway the removal of ALL the 5 rear sets that I Know that I won't need gives me enough weight saving to allow me to carry the extra Spare that I May need

Be VERY careful if fitting a cargo barrier to a D2. The D2's rear door mechanism can have a tendency to 'seize up' when traveling in dusty conditions locking you out of the rear of the vehicle. It's a good idea to make sure that the cargo barrier can be removed from the front to gain rear access just in case.

I am hoping to get a barrier that goes behind the front seats so that I can gain access via the back passenger doors as well as the rear door.

There are a multitude of things that can go pear shaped when you are off the beaten path and it is impossible to cover every contingency, However if your vehicle is well maintained you will have a better chance of having a problem free trip.
Carrying a few basic spares and a decent tool kit is pretty much all you can do and carrying an extra spare wheel will not only get you out of strife it will save you hundreds of dollars IF you have to get a replacement in a remote area.

agree.... and all my seats (except of course for front passenger and driver seats) are permanently out of my D2 and i have a 2nd cargo barrier fitted behind the front seats.

Somewhere out there, there is a custom made modified and strengthened bonnet that will carry a wheel for a D2, a bit like a Series 2 bonnet mount.
Back around 2009-2010,someone on this forum(I can't remember exactly who) made it for someone and the sale fell through. I went to buy it but was too late.
Anyway, another alternative for someone if they are lucky enough to find it.

Agree with the Be Prepared, well maintained info completely...

But the "save hundreds" doesn't stack up - especially considering the purchase of a Wheel and tyre and its associated impact on vehicle wear and tear and fuel consumption....

If that were the case, I'd have wasted 200,000+ km of lugging a second spare offroad.

Heck, I haven't used more than 3 tyre plugs in all that time...

Murphys Law perhaps Aristotle's Dictum is more appropriate.
