Starter motor

It would be ideal to get the belt off and check the alternator,waterpump brg, fan hub brg and tensioner for roughness also have a good look at the harmonic balancer as they can fail.
By the looks of it you have to remove the fan hub to do that, our local LR parts store has them up on the wall but i think they are costly for a tool you might only use a couple of times. Do a forum search for "viscous hub removal" started by "fluids" in 2011 there is a photo off home made tools that member "extreme" has made, all you need is a grinder and drill. [ sorry i'm a dill and can't post links yet]
If you do not know the age of the belt i would replace it and keep the old one for a spare.
One plus is that you had a look at your starter motor and now know there is still a bit of life left in it.

I did remove the belt and spin all the pulleys and all felt ok no notches etc
Belt is in really good knick and looks not that old

Bugga i just had a look in "what happened to your Disco today" looks like the boys have got you sorted, i will have to click on "new posts" from now on.

Here's my fan hub/drive shaft flange removal tool (5mm x 25mm flat bar heated and bent to shape) and 32mm spanner chopped and thinned to 36mm (had spanner laying around)

Hi Lemo, I need to make these tools do you need to remove and replace the bolts on the fan hub to use yours, i am thinking if i drill the holes large enough to fit over the heads it should work ok as with my fat hands it will take half an hour to bolt it on.
Since you have used yours how do that will work.

Need to remove bolts with this one, it's universal for the diff flanges so didn't want to enlarge holes.
Not sure how it'll go with the tool just over the heads?? I needed a lot of force to get the fan off and don't think the just over the heads would have held.
Worse case you'll have to remove the bolts and put some washes on if it doesn't work??

I have a home made fan spanner and pulley holder. The holder fits over the bolt heads and the spanner is a snug fit in the gap, so when applied the pulley holder can't come off. My pulley holder is a simpler design, just a single piece of 50x6 flat bar, two holes near the edge and a chunk ground away to miss the hub. It has a slight S bend to make it sit flat on the pulley face.

Thanks guys, Snug fit i never thought of that i have some 12mm flat should go close, if not there's 10mm too.

It sounds like something that even I could make (copy), as long as I had a clear idea of what to aim for!
