    Hub seal or just the o-ring

    I noticed my drivers side rear hub was leaking.

    after removing the disc this is what I found. Fortunately no contamination of the pads just yet.

    pic from underneath looking up. that is oil leaking there.

    here it is more sludgy, but it doesn't really feel like grease. More just like oil mixed with brake dust and dust. That mark is just where I put my finger.

    So do you think I am just going to be up for $10 for an oring or is it going to be $400 (or what ever the price is ) for a new hub?

    Mine was very similar only not as wet a lot of brake dust mixed what seemed to be oil not grease. Going to change the o ring and blow out the dif breather and see how it go's. but if I was going on a trip like you would probably change the hub as well just for piece of mind.

    I thought I would do the o-ring now, and do all the hubs next year before the big trip. Stops my wife complaining about how much I spend on my car.

    My diff breather has quite a bit of gunk around it. Looks like it has been weeping ever so slightly and has then attracted dust. it is rather dry. Do the breathers just pull out? is it simply that and put the air compressor onto the end of the hose and blow it out. Does the other end of the rear diff breather come out behind the tail light?

    Take it from someone who knows ( me) DO NOT buy a hub that does not have Timken bearings.

    I had one last about 4k km.

    It was blue around the outside from the heat & had blown the grease seals.

    Hi found this in a search

    The only seal is the o-ring (FTC4919), which fits to the hub assy (TAY100050). The axle is a separate item to the hub assy and you'll need a new stake nut as these need to be replaced whenever removed, and tensioned to something ludicrous.

    As the bearing is pressed into the hub (which must be heated and the bearing frozen) and the axle fits into the splines on the drive flange the only place oil can escape is either out past the o-ring, which will end up inside the disc and fling out onto the surface or past the bearing and migrate down the splines and past the nut and end up in the back of the wheel hub.

    so look like a new hub for us both

    No I think for mine at least it is the oring. Mine is leaking where the hub assembly joins the axle. The oring sits in behind there.

    So I was going to go the o ring for now, plus blow out the breather tube to see if that is blocked and thus causing the axle/diff to pressurise and force the oil out past the oring.

    I removed the diff breather and it seemed to be blocked. Put the air compressor onto it and it has cleared it out. That might have been contributing to the leak at the o-ring. I've ordered a heap of parts from Roverlord so once it turns up, I'll change over the o ring.

    For those that don't know to get the pipe out of the diff. You need to push the red part of the fitting down then pull on the hose. If yours is like mine you need to clean it first.

    Before I hit it with some parts cleaner

    Hey Guys. I was actually about to create a new thread but i thought i would try my hijacking skills.

    Heres what my issue is: I installed an Arb air locker in the rear of my d2. 2000km after that, my passenger rear hub started spewing oil out on the actual hub seal (not from the O ring between the axle/hub, and not from weeping past the splines on the axle near the large nut). So i replaced it with a aftermarket unit, but when i replaced it i noticed that just as the hub unit seats on the axle housing, the axle stops spinning freely.. almost "notchy". I consult my local rover mechanic and he says that its normal?. a few thousand K later this one has gone bad as well, doing the exact same thing

    My guess is that the ARB locker is not allowing the passenger rear half shaft to go into the axle far enough and is putting an outward pre-load on the hub bearing.. causing it to fail prematurely. Has anyone come across this?
