There was only one in the bottom of my airbox to fill with sikaflex on my V8 petrol, I also was pretty liberal with the sikaflex on all the other joints on the intake fittings as well.
Hi all. The fitter of my snorkel reckons he filled one hole (Which you can see filled with the air filter removed...the duck bill drain hole) but i had a feeling there were 2 small holes leading from bottom to the inside of the plastic pipe that is cast into the base of the air box. I don't want to take it apart unnecessarily because it's all siliconed up with sensor safe silicon.
Can anyone who has fitted a snorkel or has photos of bottom of airbox post up?
Many thanks

From memory there is 1 hole plus the duckbill.
Again from memory it's a small square hole looking from the filter side.

Many thanks. I suppose it is too much to expect that even siliconed up it's going to be completely air tight. I took off the head and covered the snorkel mouth with my hand....got a big vacuum up and was pulling the concertina part of the intake post MAF together...but wouldn't stall and seemed to be sucking it from somewhere...sounded like top of airbox. I think even immersed in water if the flow was good from the snorkel head there would be no vacuum to speak of and therefore no deformation of the air box lid/base ....no water getting in in other words.
Cheers
The airbox has the duck bill, and a small square hole at the bottom of the airbox sort of in the centre. It is difficult to see as there is a [ kind of shape over it. It essentially has a roof over the hole. It is actually convenient as it gives somewhere for the silicon to sit and seal against.
The air bypass you may be experiencing could be from the woven material hose from the inside panel of the engine bay to the airbox. I sikaflexed mine all over the outside so it was sealed but still flexible. I also sealed it to the panel of the car as originally it was only a foam seal against the car. Mine is sealed so well the water can not get out of the airbox, which is something to consider when driving through a rain storm like in Queensland and Tassie.
Even if the snorkel is sealed it is possible to remove the oval shaped woven hose i'm referring to and the air box to seal them.
Thanks Jazz!
Cheers
doesnt make much sense,,
put a duckbill in one and just leave another open...

I'm not convinced the duck bill doesn't stop dust from being sucked into the airbox from the wheel arch. I know i'm paranoid and it is before the filter but after rebuilding a dusted TD5, I'm just not risking it. It is probably less an issue after fitting a snorkel that can create positive pressure in the airbox if the head is facing forward.
Arguably the other little hole doesn't need sealing, and not doing so may be helpful to allow any moisture to drain out.
if moisture can get out,, air will get in,,
I'm uncertain just how much ram air effect a snorkle has,,
and yes a duckbill is designed to stop seawater flowing back in by the pressure of the water,,
they only work while the boat is on the plane,
sheer weight of airbox water will make them work,, not sure about airbox air pressure,,
