    Mann vs Mahle Air Filters

I recently purchased a brand new Mann and Mahle air filters to suit my D2a TD5. Both were listed as 'OEM' and I therefore assumed that I would have two of the same. What arrived:

Aside from the slightly different colouring, the first thing that I noticed is that the paper used on the Mahle was much rougher. Touching it confirmed this.
The Mahle also looked to have less pleats than the Mann - counting them confirmed this, 10 less pleats.
The orange rubber seal on the Mann is significantly softer and squishier than that of the Mahle - I suspect that it would seal better. It's also much neater in it's moulding and manufacturing.

I then held them up to a light:

The Mann filter was dark except for a pleat which was opened up to to being held curved, while the Mahle filter would light up with light coming through all over it.

While I've clearly done no scientific testing on either, it'll be Mann filter only for me from now on. The quality difference is significantly noticeable in it's feel.

Thanks mate. I only used Mahle oil filters. Made in Austria but I have a Mann air filter currently. I might see if Mann do an oil filter. Cheers

Mann-Hummel are one of the big three in filtration worldwide. (Cummins-Fleetguard, Donaldson and M-H are the biggest worldwide)
I remember Ben/isuzurover saying that their R&D budgets exceed the sales figures of companies like K&N.

re oil filters, M&H designed and are the supplier of the centrifugal filter on the TD5. I wouldn't use any other brand for the centrifuge

OEM just means Original Equipment Manufacturer ie that part was made by a company that manufactures parts for that vehicle maker. Timken could make an air filter and it would be classed as an OEM part.

I don't think Mann do an oil filter for a D2 V8. I will continue to use Mahle. Cheers

    W930/20 ? (equivalent to an ERR3340)

    [edit]Will a Z9/AFL-1 size filter fit the V8 without hitting anything ?
If so some of the best alternatives are Donaldsons P169071 and Fleetguards LF3487 (both assembled by Champion Labs in the US using the respective manufacturers synthetic media) and Amsoil Ea015 (uses Donaldson synthetic media)
Amsoil may even sell an ERR3340 equivalent ?
All 3 outflow and out filter any conventional treated cellulose media filter. Be prepared for sticker shock !

Thanks Rick. It would seem that in oil filters at least Mahle have a good rep. See for e.g.
