Leaking windscreen...............again..........still

I know this is a hoary old topic but the further I look the more not sure I am about what to do next. Last year we had a new windscreen fitted; insurance, so an aftermarket 'screen. It leaked from the top right hand headlining. Took it back. Still leaked.....and so it went on until I got so fed up with not having the car I gave up. The last time I took it back he took the 'screen out, reseated it on massive amounts of goo and could not understand that it may leak. Of course it does, and made a big mess in the recent downpour. I took it back to the shop and they are ordering a new windscreen and clips. Fair enough, but is this likely to fix it? It's been in and out that many times all the trim is wonky and falling off (or missing). I wonder how much of that is my responsibility? I am not keen on dismantling the trim again myself but do you think I should get in there and have a look before I take it back, in case it is a leak from the bodywork, not the windscreen. I mentioned to the shop that D2s are prone to windscreen leaks and suggested they Google it. If it's a bodywork leak, why leak now with the replacement 'screen and not before?

Where is the water appearing? Do you have roof bars? A sunroof?

Mine was leaking in from the sunroof, due to a blocked hole underneath the car.

I believe some people have had leaks from the roof bars.

Check also that the drains from the plenum are completely clear, because that fills really quickly in a downpour, and if the drains are even partly blocked water will enter the car.

Check for rust at the top of the pillars as well. It doesn't take much.

I've had the cover off the inside of the windscreen pillar and it looked not rusty, but do I have to remove the headlining to view it properly?

What are the chances that in the windscreen fitting process something has got bunged up and it's not the glass itself responsible for water getting in.

Wet headlining precludes the plenum ( old name for that part under the windscreen where the heater etc draw air from, that bit under the wipers when you lift the bonnet ), which will give you wet carpet, but not wet headlining.

Yep, telling us exactly where the water is appearing helps....

The rust I mean is often visible outside, where the gutter ends near the top corner of the screen.

Have a look at that bulletin. I haven't seen that before.

I get a lot of windscreens replaced as I run a used car dealership. I was talking to the guys who do our screens the other day, they pointed to my D2 and said "they are the worst screens to do. they always leak. i always charge heaps when I have to quote them".
So that tells me that its a difficult job to get right, but also that it is the responsibility of your repairer. Especially if you had it done under insurance, I would be screaming at them to fix it.

That's interesting. It explains why, when I got the guys from that major brand out to reseal my screen, they spent some time looking at my car and told me to check my sunroof before they did the job. They were right, as it happens, and they didn't charge me...

Sounds like it's a nightmare for the windscreen fitters. I just want a car that doesn't leak. like it used not to! Give 'em another chance I guess, but if the leak is in the bodywork, not the windscreen, fitting a another screen just might not be the answer.

We had the same problem as you in 2014. A large windscreen repairer of the Irish variety was engaged by our insurer to replace a screen on our old D2a. They had three attempts at it, well experienced fitters, and the eventual outcome (because NONE of the three screens was leakproof) was to use a genuine screen from Land Rover dealer in Geelong. This immediately solved the problem.

The problem was the shape of the aftermarket screens - they did not fit correctly.

Cost them a lot of cash (4 screens, time and three top trims and a radio that filled with water and let the smoke out).
I still use them - they learnt a good lesson - have a listen to the customer because sometimes what they might say is wise!

My advice - get the fitter to use a genuine screen.
