If the sump is off , by removing the stud on the lhf through the cyl head by double nutting , then the job can be done without disturbing the cooling system on 10 p engines

[QUOTE=lyonsy;2707311]btw once a engine is broken in if you can see the hone marks then it was honed with too coarse of a hone and will be causing blow by and loss compression/QUOTE]
Modern diesels are diamond honed to provide the troughs without the peaks , then plateau finished, on a td5 along with others you will / should see the factory hone marks through most of the life of the engine, the troughs in the cyl retain a miniscule amount of oil to provide lubrication to the rings ( and as a by product , good sealing), if an engine runs with no oil pressure for even a small amount of time the oil squirters can't lubricate the underside of the piston to cool and lube the small end as well as ring lubrication and its all downhill from there very quickly
thanks again guys I will get a second opinion on monday and let you know what they say.
sounds like I'll be up for at least $3000 worth, either way?
well friends i'll be taking this joker to fair trading, do these look like newly installed big end bearings? even if it had lost pressure the 2nd time would they look this bad? i think not.

didn't even clean the sump, we think he just replaced the chains, whacked it all back together and waited for his cash cow to return.

so. im weighing up my options;
option 1 is get a new motor, who's got a good TD5 for me?
option 2 is get a different car.
Sorry to say i think a few of us at the start of this gave our opinions on the Turkey[bighmmm]
Sue the lying ripoff spankers arse :bat: Really that is just so wrong what he has done and is trying to do to you by passing the buck :bat:
Good luck mate keep us informed and i hope you have a good outcome [wink11]
yep. to be honest i'm about ready to sell the D2 as is and get an old car, all my old hillmans and VW's never let me down. I reckon i'm done with moderns. I've got a 63 hillman imp (oldest in australia) sitting here that I can sell to cover the costs of the new engine but I'd rather keep it than the LR.
if anyone wants a really nice D2 with a busted motor hit me up. leather interior, ACE, good everything except the motor.
the mechanic that's checked it out for me is a LR expert and he knew all about the other guy, he's quoted $1200 to install if I source a new motor,
it would be worth doing as he's the total opposite of the previous guy, honest to a fault and so keen to help, declined payment for checking it for me, said he likes rescuing people from the other guy. (they have history)
still, if anyone can supply a good motor please let me know, I need to work out a budget,
thanks again gents,
cam.
here's where i'm at with this thing, rego has expired, I have 3 months to renew.
fair trading are no help at all, they say I can take it back to the rip off merchant and get him to fix it (HA!), or go to tribunal, I doubt I'll ever see any of my money again this way.
OPTION 1:
I can source a complete TD5 (write off) with a motor at 320,000 for $1000, everything on this car is good, except it's written off (panel damage).
install will cost around $1200-1500 so that's $2500 on top of the 7k i've already spent, for a motor that may or may not be better than the one that was in there already, but at least I'll have spares of everything else (auto, transfer case etc etc)
OPTION 2:
I can source a good short motor for about 1k too, but my mechanic reckons my head will need work so there's unknown expense there.
OPTION 3:
I sell my car as is, I don't even know what differences there are between certain discos but this one seems to have all the nice features like ACE, leather interior etc, mechanic says it's one of the good ones, was impressed with the suspension not losing air while sitting...
what's a good motorless TD5 worth????
honestly I'm so broke now it's either going to be option 1 or 3, what do you guys reckon?
cheers,
cam.
Option 1, can you do the change-over yourself?
Yes with guidance. Having time to do it is the issue. :)
