I had similar symptoms before my fuel pump died.
When I was diagnosing the problem I was pulling fuel lines off at the tank and I was getting fuel through back to the tank but turned out that it was only low pressure and I had no High pressure from the pump. Replaced pump and all good.
I also, have just replaced fuel pump.
If yours is original, check the non return valve on the fuel filter return line (pop the connector on the top of the filter block, then use 19 mm ring spanner). If the valve is failing it can intermittently starve the pump. Mine looked okay, but was also 240 000 k's old so....
The replacement part is a plastic sleeve (Part VUB503950).
Yes, all fixed. Going to look at rebuilding the pump I took out as a spare.
Only issue I had was I didn't tighten the locking collar up tight enough and over a couple of days air bled in and drained the lines requiring a fresh purge (at least, I am reasonably sure that is what happened, no leaks elsewhere and the fpr block is only a couple months old, but I will check for the diesel leak next time I am under there) and god awful white smoke palaver. Should be sorted now. Also frequent purging (5 accelerator taps at key position 2) murders your battery charge. Have jumpers or a charger handy. Or a friendly neighbour at the campsite...
Well Afaik it is fixed by replacing the Bearmach fuel filter with a Mahle.
I had put 2washers on the water sensor so perhaps that was the actual problem, although there were no leaks. So maybe my fault.
pump hardly makes a peep now, and power is good . I have been towing my 900 kg camper on cruise control even, and egts go up to 700 plus if you are a bit slow to disengage.
no oil gain or water loss.
