Out of interest, and I'm not sure if anybody has pursued this - not that I've heard at least.
However the ZF6&8HP are different to the back of the 4HP but there are adaptors that you can buy to mount to the LT230.
You can get these from:

There was talk about the Ford 6HP, and I'm not sure that this is actually the same gearbox as the ZF one. I think it may be made under licence as some sort of copy of the ZF but with differences that don't allow interchangably. There is a mob in NSW that do adaptors for the Ford version, which I understood didn't work on an actual ZF gearbox.
I haven't seen adaptors between the 6HP and the Td5 and as the comms are via canbus, I'm not sure how possible this would be. To get a 6HP into a D2 you might be looking at an engine conversion as well.
I agree, the 6HP is miles ahead of the 4HP, however the M57/6HP28 is better than the Td5 in every respect - 210kw/580Nm stock standard. Td5 cant even come close in the auto or with reliability in a worksburger Td5 manual.
In the pics is the tail of the 6HP which should be common with the 8HP. On the side you can see it doesn't have a removable bellhousing, so if it is made to fit a Td5, it would be an adaptor plate rather than a bellhousing replacement.

On YouTube there is a video of a defender 90 with an M57 and ZF8HP with paddle shifters, goes like stink.
This one? Single turbo as well, not the twin turbo!

Well here it is. Td5 to ZF8HP adaptor. I'm not sure how the electronics will work.

Very cool, you'd have to be very keen on keeping your td5 tho not to just complete the job with an m57.
