Possibly because back when you did it ,topping up would have flattened the battery, then after a good run giving it a charge it will bubble , if overfilled it would bubble out, and being ( I'm assuming) near the turbo would give a Strong sulphurous smellQuote:

No sulphur smells on today's commute (~160 klms) following disconnecting aux battery.

Had this problem in my disco 3 and discovered that the vent tube for the battery had dislodged and smell coming through the vents.
