Battery charged and the car seems much happier. I did notice that when I turned the key off once that all the dash lights stayed on and once they started to flicker so something still isn't 100%.

There appears to be a little bit of a voltage difference between teh battery negative and various earth points so I need to check the main earth strap connection (seems to run to the side of the block but looks like a real pig to get to!!!!!!).
