Quick tips for TD5 exhaust removal

    2003 TD5

Hey guys, I'm going to a holding yard tomorrow to remove the exhaust pipe from the turbo to the centre muffler of an earlier TD5 as they don't have a CAT. (A friend of mine is De-catting his 2003 TD5). I will only have about half an hour to rip it out, by myself. Just wondering if there's any tips on techniques or tools to make it a quick easy job.

    Cheers fellas.

For the turbo end lots of extension bars, sometimes it's easier to get to them from the bottom, and that is about 2 6" extensions and maybe another one.
Remove the engine cross member, it probably won't come out otherwise.
Take a hacksaw, if you are on the clock then the mid box end bolts might be corroded and tight, easier to hacksaw than keep going and have them shear anyway, probably after the first one has finally come off and you are 3 threads from the other one coming off
The nuts are an odd size, 14 or 15mm IIRC, you might find the midbox end is imperial and/or needs two different spanner sizes.

Definitely do the two harder to get to nuts from underneath. Lots of extensions on a 3/8" breaker bar and then ratchet is my advice. Tag some safety glasses.

Wd40 everything before you start so it can soak in on the harder to loosen ones while you're removing the easy ones

Turbo end 15 mm nuts , mid box usually 17 , but if they've been replaced can be 19 , cross member bolts 10 mm but use a good single hex socket and take along a 3/8 socket in case you round off the x member bolts and need to hammer the 3/8 the on as they can be tight, also a big screwdriver or tyre lever to lever off the rubber mount, may need to jack the car up to get it out , your mate owes you a few beers, I've always removed the turbo end 15 mm from above with a ratchet spanner but whatever works

also hit the rubber exhaust hanger with some lube as it will make it easier to slide it off the pin.

    Thanks fellas!
So happened one of the wrecks already had the cross members removed and the pipe disconnected from the mid muffler. All I had to do was unbolt from turbo. Piece of cake and swapping it out back at home was simple too.
Some possible power gains noticed. Feels like you don't have to stomp it as much to get things moving. Feels a bit freer, so to speak. Also a slight turbo whistle now audible on take-off, only some of the time though and a whistle in the exhaust at idle. (Haven't had my head near the exhaust pipe to hear if it's there when moving

What would be another inexpensive mod to get a little more out of her? EGR already removed. Keeping in mind she's a family car at times, so I don't want anything too loud or droning. Is it very loud with the mid muffler removed? What about droning? Differences between complete removal and hi-flow? And what about the rear? Thanks.
