    Todays Job on TD5

    Attachment 128236

Did the washers and O rings on the TD5 injectors today.
It wasn't as difficult as I thought but lots of time to do at about 4.5 hours.
I had no oil gain but the car didn't want to start a couple of times yesterday so I bit the bullet.
I thought I could hear the pump screaming on the way home from Sydney yesterday. I guess bonus with new hearing aids.

Interestingly there was no pressure in the head when I undid the fuel heater union.

I followed the instructions in Discovery 2 site which were pretty good.
I made up a lever by heating a lever with map gas and bending to 90 degrees and the injectors came out easily. I was afraid that It would be difficult without the special tool but it was easy.

IMHO you don't need the special tool and I found it easy to grab the retainers out with a nut grabber tool . I used my little Black & Decker lithium screwdriver to wind the myriad of bolts out.

Anyone know whether these are good bad or indifferent. The car had red orings rather than the green factory ones so I guess it may have been done before.
Anyway a test drive was good and it seems to have extra power although could be the halo effect. It started after a couple of attempts after I did the 5 pedal stroke thing.
Oh BTW no faults logged on Nanocom before or after.

    Regards Philip A

    Hi Philip,

Having just bought a Td5, all these jobs await me. Any chance of some pics of your injector removing tool and nut grabber? Thanks,

G'day Phil, how did you clean up the seats in the head where the copper washers sit, i have just cleaned up mine using a piece of dowel with a wad of scotchbrite scourer d/s taped to the end, this worked ok but i still have a mark on one of the seats which i'll leave as i don't want to use emery paper on it.
Just wondering what other guys have done.
    Cheers

I found the seats pretty clean, as the leaks seem to be all on the injector side of the copper washer.( as per the photos)
I duct taped some towel to a screwdriver and swished it around , then blew loose carbon away with an air gun.
I found that there was a fair amount of carbon on the pintles and in a channel that is inside the raised section of the injector base ( you can see indents from the raised ridge on the washers), and I used a dental pick to clean there and finished with scotchbrite and then a towel. I made sure all the washers sat flat and sometimes had to revisit the shaft of the pintle. I didn't get too enthusiastic with the dental pick just taking out enough carbon to let the washers sit flat.

Ok, tool 1 is an old Stanley 36CM long screwdriver which I heated and bent to 90degrees to give initial lift to the injector.

Second is a small ALDI lever which is part of a lever set, which I bent to 90degrees plus to lift the injector fully out. It was successful but probably would have been better if the handle was longer as it fouled on the side of the head cavity a bit. However it did the job. You place the fulcrum over where the saddle bolt goes.
Third is just a common nut grabber which I used to lift the saddles as they catch and jam very easily and there is little room for fingers down there. I tried gluing a small very powerful magnet on some stainless rod but the damn thing was fatally attracted to the solenoid and unglued itself onto a solenoid.

I also GENTLY tapped the injectors home using a hammer and large screwdriver . Who said you couldn't use hammers on a D2.
    Regards Philip A
