    V8 Converter in td5

    HI Folks,
I bought a recently recon auto for my td5 from TRS. It has the V8 converter upgrade. Just wondering if its suitable as I only have a standard non-chipped engine? It gets used a fair bit for towing an 8x5 trailer with landscaping supplies for our property.

Also, the setup came with two flexplates, is this usual with the V8 converter adaption? The TRS guys said it only had standard length flexplate to converter bolts. I will of course be doing lots of measuring of converter depth t make sure its got the right clearance, but just wondered if you''d seen this mod done like this.
    Cheers
    Dave

From memory - not sure I have any photos, the HD torque converter from Ashcrofts looks the same as the standard TD5. I'd check that the spigot engages OK on the TD5 as a first step since it looks different on your converters.
The left one is the TD5 I think from the spigot, though the size gives a hint too.

The double flex plate looks like a bodge. Ashcroft supplied a bunch of spacers to ensure the flex to torque converter free distance was acceptable, I don't think I used any, but if I had used them all at the same time it probably would have got close to using two flex plates together.
That suggests to me that the offset for the previous engine was off by a bit. Hunchy feeling is that maybe it's a V8 transmission in total and that the bellhousing is longer, hence the need for the extra thick spacer and it does make sense to use two flex plates in that case.

The HD flex plate from ashcrofts is not noticeably different the standard one (assuming it was a standard one before) I assume it's the material that makes the difference.

FWIW the V8 (3.5 - 4.0L) ratios are the same, I know the bellhousing is different. The HP22 box as standard doesn't offer any advantage, other than bigger torque converter, the HP24 (4.6L) has a bigger oil pump and maybe some stronger internals so is a real upgrade. The 24 box needs a longer bell housing or something for a TD5 I think.
