    OK, just hypothetically speaking...

    Hi Rick130 and other gurii of matters oily and slippery,

    Lets say there is this old fossil with a 300Tdi, and drums and drums of Castrol RX Super CI-4 plus, 15W40 sitting in his shed. And let's say this old fossil just bought a 2003 Discovery Td5. What do you reckon might happen if this old fossil put his CI-4 plus 15W40 into his Td5 and changed it every 10K km, instead of the specified 5W30 oil?

    Just wondering...

    i think the old fossil would be very foolish....

    I suspect that the old fossil would end up with a TD5 without lobes on the injector cam

    no issue with it, slight increase in fuel consumption (very slight)

    in the owners manual it actually list's 15w40 with the td5 with the same temperature ratings as the 10w40, i wouldent worry about having any cam issues or their would be a lot of trucks in Australia with stuffed cams since they run unit injectors off the cam.

    so long as you dont go anywhere its going to be below 5degC for an extended period (its rated to 10 in the manual) you shouldent have drama.

    15W is not even listed in the workshop manual nor in the owner's manual i have, i'd not put such oil in my beloved D2 whatsoever, if it's cold outside would take many seconds for that oil to climb from the sump which could increase engine wear, the fact that there are reckless owners who are using such oil in a Td5 despite of all recommendations and theyr's engine is still running doesnt mean it's OK IMO
