Fading dash indicates electrical fault - key probably a red herring. Check battery terminals, earths etc
I couldn't start the car this morning with the third spare key. This key has worked in the past and locks and unlocks the doors. The car battery is charged and the Aux battery is at >85%
The key turns in the lock but the engine will not turn over. The dash lights fade out on position II.
The other spare key started the car ok. The ABS light was on until the car drove a short distance, I guess speed over 10 kph.( do not know if this is related). I drove to work, about 6 mins and then the third spare key did start the car.
Any ideas any one?
Thanks
Julian

I'd second that, check the negative battery lead
The car starts first time with the LR key and not with the previously working 3rd key. Yet the key and lock and unlock the doors. Is there a separate circuit for the receiver in the ignition switch?
I can't help but think that the problem is the key.

ABS goes off when you hit either 6 or 8 km/h from memory.
I would check the battery terminals.
Assume the non-working key is not damaged?
The non working key has spent most of its life sitting on a shelf. I'll have a look at the insides tonight.
Update...
The non LR key has a Valeo chip dated '/07' The circuit looks good to me.
the geniune LR key has a Valeo chip dated '/10'
The non key would not start the car tonight and when I held the working key very close the car started.
Conclusion:- The non standard key has a intermittent fault in the chip.
Fix:- Buy a new chip.

Can you lock/unlock with that fob which doesnt start the car?, if you do it might be a rover 75 fob which misses the hardware for the passive remmobilisation exciter coil's signal detection that's why it doesnt start with it and when it starts the passive immobiliser is disabled by the other original fob, can you see the square bit on the left upper side of the picture in that non-starter fob?

Nope, not there on mine.
This was sold as a Discovery 2 fob.
They still sell them

Bloody hell, close to $100.00 wasted what with getting the key cut and all. At least I know why it doesn't work.
Can that bit be added to the board?
I've asked for a refund, I bought it last November so I think I have Buckleys.
Very annoying.

No, you can't just solder that into a rover 75(or freelander) fob cos there is a difference on the PCB too ...i've seen these kind of fobs sold as D2 fobs as they work to lock/unlock after they are sync'd but as long as the passive immobiliser is enabled they dont start the car unless you use them immediately after an unlock command while the passive immobilisation is inactive... if you disable the passive immobiliser with nanocom it should work or give an unlock command with the fob(even if the vehicle is unlocked) then try to start
