Mice.
Hey there discoverers,
I noticed when working under the bonnet the other day that there is the sound of something activating / actuating back and forth, sort of sounds like a squeaky door hinge cycling approx once per second. Comes from the vicinity of the turbo. This is with vehicle unlocked for an hour or so, but not started. Cold engine. Haven't started it for a week.
Any thoughts?
Mice.
If you don't like trucks, stop buying stuff.
Hi Adam,
Is the ignition completely OFF (or is the key not in the ignition lock) when this sound occurs?
IanV8 may well be on the money.
If it is some creature, I would expect it to go quiet for a while if you tap a screwdriver or spanner on the turbo heat-shield (or the plenum at the foot of the windscreen).
Various creatures do seem to like the shelter and warmth of an engine bay.
There is a large space beneath the air-intake plenum (and part of this is close to the turbo).
Let us know what it is when you find out!
Cheers,
Andrew
Haha I guess I wasn't descriptive enough.
No no key in ignition.
The sound is a consistent mechanical repetition of constant frequency and periodicity. 100% not made by a filthy organic. Although... now I am wondering.
I will record it when I get home.
Like a space invaders game ( if you can remember that:-), its the abs modulator, normal.
Do you think it could possibly be air bubbles being drawn at regular intervals into the site of some slight leakage?
Such a leak might seal off when the engine heats up, so it doesn't show up easily.
Conceivably the oil cooler located on the exhaust side of the head, towards the back.
Discorevy got his post in while I was typing (too slow!)
He seems pretty sure!
I would not have known about the ABS modulator.
