Sounds like the thrust bearing to me. And yes replace the flywheel.

I am about to pull the Td5 drive train out to replace the spigot bush after waiting too long. The poor things moans every time I put my foot on the clutch and try to engage a gear. I will replace the clutch while I have it all apart, but what about the flywheel? I have never had a problem with it, so how would I know if it needs replacing or not? Or should I just replace it anyway for another lazy $600? The Disco has done 210,000km and is very well behaved; no major leaks; I see the 3 amigos once or twice a year, but that is it.
Any thoughts on the flywheel before I put it up on blocks? Any cautionary tales from previous experience?
Thanks.

Before I had a Land Rover I did not have any torque wrenches. Now I have three.

If the noise is only when your trying to select a gear then yep , probably spigot, if only when foot on the clutch , then thrust , no matter as you'll no doubt replace both , don't forget to let the new spigot sit in an oil bath overnight, before fitting otherwise it'll be having a short life. If you have no clutch shudder and the dmf has a decent amount of resistance between the rubbers and the face has no heat cracks then it'll go again.
I would replace it unless you like pulling gearbags out of discos repeatedly... And 210k is really pushing the friendship regarding flywheel life....
And yes 100% sounds like the spigot bushing to me

The Isuzu 110. Solid and as dependable as a rock, coming soon with auto box😊
The Range Rover L322 4.4.TTDV8 ....probably won't bother with the remap..😈
+1 for the above ...replace the flywheel and you are covered for the next 150K again(not even genuine items are how they were when the D2s were built), it's better to heat up the oil before you drop the bush in it then let it there over night

and just to repeat like a parrot.... everything Justin C said...
spigot bush, and actually do replace it, i have pulled out many a gearbox to replace a spigot bush the last mechanic didnt replace when doing a clutch replacement.
*the bronze alloy spigot bush is pre-soaked during manufacturer, there is a fancy name for it, regardless of that, just copper anti seize the **** out of it on install.
so the list...
engine rear main seal
spigot bush
duel mass flywheel
driven plate
pressure plate
thrust assembly
clutch slave
clutch master
I will put beer on it, whatever in the above list you dont change will fail shortly there after....

Thanks to everyone who posted a reply to my original question regarding the flywheel. I will replace the flywheel while I have the whole thing in bits and anything else that is within reach while I am there - I can't argue with the logic of DazzaTD5 who said "whatever I don't change will fail shortly after.."
On an engineering note - I can't believe that the small spigot bearing gets soaked in oil and that is enough lube for the next 100,000 gear changes over 10 years. Amazing.
Thanks guys.
Daz.
Even tho i am pushing the boundary`s with my DMF
I would replace the DMF and all associated parts if doing the clutch
As they say do the job once and do it right![]()
