Can't open rear door - tailgate door

Had the same problem on my old D2a, very common and very frustrating. Tip. Never fit a cargo barrier that cannot be removed from the rear seat side. I found the push/pull/swear method worked most of the time otherwise a short trip along a suitably bumpy track did the trick. Eventually I dismantled the whole mechanism and gave it a thorough clean with Brakekleen (or other non oily cleaner) and thoroughly lubed it with powdered graphite which solved the problem till we retired the Disco from outback travel.

In the last 16 years it has always worked. All the hammer did was jarred the lever back instead of just rolling it back with your fingers.

Reviving this thread. I have a cargo barrier that can only be removed from the cargo area and a 22 year old rear door lock. I like living dangerously. Anyway for those who have made the journey inside their D2 rear door and understand the issues, which part or parts on this link would keep the old girl sorted in the rear for the next umpteen years? On mine it was 4. Bugger to do once it fails... well, obviously.

I should have kept my mouth firmly buttoned. I have displeased the Land Rover gods by my post and...of course...today it started playing up. So the question is whether removing the door card and the lock and opening levers etc and giving it a good clean out and lube I cure it or whether this just delays replacing the locking mechanism...mmm.

How exactly is it “playing up”?

Mine used to not be able to be opened if it wasn’t closed properly. To overcome I would have to give it a real firm shove to get it to latch properly and then it would open.

I probably just needed to adjust it a bit so it didn’t need to be so tight but as long as I always slammed it shut it would open OK.

Does sound like a lot of the reports above. Possibly needs a good clean.

Next time it happens try giving the door a firm shove with your shoulder.

They do eventually get worse even with regular cleaning and lubing. I replaced mine with a new genuine one and keep it clean and lube with graphite powder.

If you reach up into the actual handle and pull it down till it can’t go any further that will normally allow the latch to reset and open.

well it does with mine any way.I do have a bit of play in my door handle ( I believe the springs are stretched. Be careful dismantling the door lock as the plastics will be very brittle. ( I snapped one of my locking rod holders to allow the mechanism to work and had to fix it by drilling a hole and using zip tyres. Works a treat for now but would like to replace it with a hole new mechanism eventually if the parts are still available.😱
