Can it be done?

dont know of d3/d4 struts
but it would be possible to fit the rear airbags of a d2 if you are willing to drop off and get rid of the front sway bar you could fit shockers their,
if you did not want to run electric height controls etc you could just get some height control valves off a truck to control the suspension.
if you did this you will need to put the 2in spacers under the rear airbags as rear airbags installed in the front at std height will be a 2in lift so the vechile will get a 2in lift

Isnt the ride height set by the volume of air in the bag?

Yes, but don't forget that that is controlled by the ride height sensors.

Yep, which is why a different airbag wont affect the ride height.

Misunderstood ur point.

I didn't add spacers under my bags, we just calibrated the heights on the ecu to account for the 40mm front lift. TRS never said it was bad so I figured it's ok.

It will be a matter of suck and see, if the same pressure/ height setting gets me level then tap into the air line each side and use the height from Nanocom to control.

If needed spacers in one end to get ride height correct, if that does not work then preset the front at required ride height and leave the rear (SLS) standard.

Just playing in my head at the moment.

Using std type air suspension is a problem with the shocker through the middle, rather use D4 type that externally mount shocker.

I played around with air strut designs for my current Trailer Build...
I contemplated running disco 3/4 units but was disappointed in their overall stroke length and price not super awesome
If I was contemplating your mod I would buy one of

More configurable more compact and longer stroke.
You would need to seriously mod the upper spring mount to support the top of the strut about 250mm above its existing level
But that sort of thing has been done a million times when people have run coil-overs on discos or defenders
Search pirate or old discoweb for front coil over conversions
Then just do that but whack in an air strut

In the end on my trailer I ended up just throwing in cheap double convoluted bags and external dampers

I thought the suspension layout in the D4 was essentially the same as a D3 with shocker in the centre and airbag on the outside (like a coil over in normal suspension).

I am not up on the D4 though.

Now I think some more about it, it probably isn't as straight forward as I initially though. I suspect the spring mount would be located about half way down the strut and the top mount would need to be somewhere around the top of the current shock mount. There would be a bit of fabricating and relocating of some components, but I'm sure it could be done. The lower end looks like it would drop straight on to a HD bar pin.
