D2a Spare Wheel Carrier

I've just done said job to fit 265-75-16 on my carrier.......I know the flip seems to be the way to go but I opted to raise the carrier 25mm by re drilling the holes 25mm down, just enough room on the plate to be strong and a little trimming needed for rear wiper as per the flip. I raised rather than flipped as it keeps the tyre position rather than moving over 50-60mm towards centre of door, as I'm running recovery tracks I didn't want to block reverse camera or take up any more of rear view mirror ......

Either way is just as easy, just depends on your thoughts and wants!

Don't trim the wiper or carrier - just pull the wiper off and adjust it a few splines to the right. Although if you're OCD you might not like the wiper at a slight angle at the back

How do you find the 265x75x16?
Muddies or AT?
I'm about to go down the same route with muddies on standard 16x7 alloys.

I'm running Maxxis 980 AT, I think they are a perfect size for the disco with a 2" lift as fill the arches just about right. I've had no issues with rubbing etc.. altho they are mighty close to the rear of the front guards so collect mud and stones around the mud flaps and likely to pull them off if your unlucky!

I did notice the power drop and the braking force is certainly decreased but nothing thats not adaptable to with your driving style, I did however do some tweaking to the engine after fitment but that was going to happen anyway so overall the car still performs better than it did........

If you have a lift then the bigger tyres are a must in my opinion as the 235-70-16 standard size tyres just look lost!

As for the standard alloys, I still have the LR 16x7 alloys and have fitted this size with no problem and car drives fine, if I'm correct I think the min thats recommended for the 265-75-16 is a 7.5" rim but I and many others have this size on the 7" rim with no problems at all.

If anything you notice a touch less feel to the steering & car will move about a touch more due to the high side wall but yet again nothing to worry about...

In short, I'd not go down in size from these now as for me this is the perfect size unless you want to cut arches and change diff ratios etc... with 33" and upwards. 265-75-16 works out to be 31.6" (depending slightly on tyre brand & range)

No dramas,,,,,,I was the same fella, checking and checking again to see if going that size was right but having gone there I'd say its the way to go in my opinion!

Not the best pics but first is how she sits now on 2" lift with 265-75-16, next is the rear with the 265-75-16 and the last is when the tyres went on (excuse the dirt) fronts are 265-75 and rears are the old 245-70

I quite like them. I gave the deegans a good run in the gravel and muddy tracks over a recent 4 night trip. I did about 1600kms on them, probably 1000 of it offroad. Tyres went well in the slippery stuff and handle ok at speed and in the wet.

When new (I've done about 4k on them now) they were super noisy on the freeway. The trip or the extra kms has quietened them a quite a bit though, but there is still a noise there.

I was getting rubbing on full lock. However, I have fitted a set of terra firma wheel spacers that I had bought previously. This has fixed it, and has made a big handling improvement. Plus it looks better as the wheels sit further out. (No need for a lecture, I know the pros/cons for spacers. But these are hub concentric billet ones. I've run similar ones on an old Jeep for years and never had an issue with my hubs. Plus I'm illegal anyway as a 50mm lift plus 50mm tyre increase and no emissions, so in for a penny...). The car drives alot better with them IMO.

Mudflaps were removed before, so not sure how they would have gone.

I have noticed an increase in my trans temp, probably +10 degrees. I am going to put another cooler on to solve this. Also EGTs are 10% hotter, but see comment on turbo core below.

Performance wise, I didn't notice much (I fitted a new turbo core the day after I got the tyres) so cant really say, but it was never a rocket ship. However, I am getting a remap done now. Where I did notice it was when loaded on the trip, I couldn't keep up with the other cars on the highway through the rolling hills etc. But that was probably a similar issue as before.

What I would say is, that the vibration around the 2000rpm mark for the TD5, is no longer all that noticeable. I had done the mounts, HB and handbrake shoes previously to remove the most of it. But there was still a lingering bit there. Now I don't really notice it. Not sure if it is the bigger wheels change the speed it comes in etc.

Also I will need to speedo correct.

Question - Do I need to adjust the speedo coefficient in my nannocom. I know it wont change the displayed speed, but does it effect the shift points for the trans etc.

265/75/16 will run at close enough to10% slow on the speedo so easy to calculate , calibrate nanocom to 1.10 , no it won't change the shift points , they will still change ( depending on load , driver demand ) at the speedo read road speed, including lock up .
