    Driving with a dodgy U joint

    Hi all

    In another problem to the list this year, ive noticed the stearing on my 2002 D2 is starting to harden up in spots, esp at lower speeds. Done a bit of reading on here and 90% sure its to do with the universal joint. Plently of info here about replacing it, but my question is how okay am i driving it for the time being....is the u joint something that will go and completely cook my steering?

    It can be scare inducing if it locks up tight when you are trying say to enter a road.
    You can sometimes reduce the problem by removing the shaft and sitting the UJ in a can of oil overnight.
    BUT steering is a pretty fundamental need in any car so a new shaft or UJ is advised ASAP.

    Front prop shaft squeaks

    The front prop shaft will squeak or chirp. It sounds like a flock of sparrows. You can check to see if the joint is loose.

    The joint will not damage the steering. If it does fall apart, it will damage the transfer case.

    The front ones, You will feel it when it is ready to let go if you are lucky. The biggest tell tale is vibration in your steering. How we picked my sons D2 up. Don't let it go, if they do drop it can be catastrophic for the drive train and even cause severe accidents. Fix it. Not always easy to detect by just getting under and playing with prop shaft.
    Wont cook your steering, you just feel it failing through it, due to vibration through the front diff.
    When we pulled the uni out one section had just about worn right through. It can be a bugger of a job with the double cardan joint and when I have to do again will get someone else to do it or get a Woods prop shaft.

    Have a look on YouTube as to how to replace them yourself. I did one of mine that had collapsed- just using a bench vice, circlip pliers and some sockets to press the old out/new in. The hardest part was getting the shaft unbolted. Had to send it to the mechanic for that.
    Drove around for a day with the diff lock on so I could get drive to the wheels.
    If they aren't greasable Uni's, they probably need updating anyhow.
    I have one on my bench waiting to replace the last non-greasable left on the shaft.

    Soaking a steering u joint works best when the oil is preheated to 100°C or thereabouts. I've not seen a stiff steering joint fail but it could lead to a hair raising moment if you're driving and the steering no longer behaves as expected.

    People don't read posts correctly they only see key words and the brain goes into overdrive. Key word ''uni joint'' so brains say prop shaft.
    Imagine if you where posting about a ''nipple'' on a suspension uni joint and the brains will go into Breast mode
