Everyone has there own view, I took my D2 on some of the remotest tracks in the country so when I did many of the same tracks in my D3 I can only compare what I expierenced between the 2 cars. In saying that I wouldn't hesitate to jump in a D2 and do it again. My personal view is I would have the D3 air suspension every time.

As for the fuel figures I cant comment as I haven't driven a petrol D3 and have never bothered to look at what fuel they use. I was just offering up a suggestion that may fall into the O/P budget.

This is interesting.
My thoughts were that if I went for something newer than a D2 it would have to be a D4 & that is at least 2 or more years away.
BTW I have no interest in a D5, they just don't look like a Disco.

I had not thought about a petrol D3 but will certainly have a look now. I realise the D2 is smaller than the D3 but this car would mainly be used to drive 1,2 or 3 of the 7 (7! we must be mad) kids to Ravenshoe, Cairns, school near Ingham & stuff like that. Also the odd trip to Isa & stuff like that.
Also for me to have a bit of fun in & go up the coast, China Wall & places like that which are a bit of a goat track.

My main concern with comfort is I'm not getting younger & to drive to our Ravenshoe place is 10.5 hours & my bum isn't as padded as a good seat.

My requirements are a Land Rover, 5 seats, sit on 110kph all day, tows OK (1.5t max), A/C, cruise, reasonable/good comfort, prefer a manual (got to start teaching all these kids to drive in a couple of years) & definitely NOT a Toyota!


I know a Tojo would be the wise choice but the old saying about holes & every has one.

I actually thought a petrol D3 (V6 or V8) might be a good idea if you are not doing too much stop/start city style driving or really heavy towing. There are a bunch of D3's online in that price range ($10k - $15K) and at least a couple are diesels. I recently bought a 2006 model D3 TDV6 for $6K, with admittedly high Km's, but lovingly looked after which now supplements my D1 300Tdi.

There are D3 manuals about but they are rare in Aus, and mostly (but not always) came with the coiler version, which needed a 2" lift to be useful offroad. Don't discount the petrol D3 idea totally if you can get one for under $10K. I think it's a lot of car for the money. Having said that I do have a rather large soft spot for the D1's & D2's though!

With what you’ve described a D2 would certainly be a good choice. It sounds like you don’t need kids’ seats, so D2 would probably fine for room. I have 3 seats jammed across the back which uses up a lot of space and entry into the middle seat difficult.

TD5 certainly has better economy. I’ve only had my D3 V8 a couple of weeks and it’s averaging above 14L/100kms that’s a mix of urban and highway and a very light right foot. The TD5 around town is about 12L and gets down to about 10-11L on long trips fully loaded. BTW both are autos.

Considering where you live how will you go for parts and servicing for a Landrover, that could be the reason why Tojo's are like "you know what".

Basically you have to keep on top of servicing & checking.
When I had the D3 I had it serviced before time & had the LR specialist check everything thoroughly for ware, replaced if even close to worn out.

The D3 wore out bearings & a I stuffed a front diff (my fault) but it always managed to get me to Cairns even if a little noisily.

As for that other brand, one of my staff is stuck in Mt Isa because they don't have a cooling hose for his L/C GLX. So, is it really that different?
And, there is always Evilbay! We do have a mechanic who owns a Deffer & does a bit of private work if you plead, beg or reciprocate favours.

I have 6 kids, and I am on the second leaner in the manual D2a, doing hill starts atm. Fun fun fun.

Perhaps something like this, not a D2a but low claimed Kms.

Whilst D2a's might be 'the pick of the litter' does the premium price often asked represent value ?

Manual, Td5 though IMO the petrol V8 would make a better long distance highway cruiser (I've owned and driven both) but the Td5 better off road and better economy.

Low Km V8 petrol versions are more common in the cities and are usually cheaper than their higher km Td5 brothers.

I have made this comment before. Despite the marketing the big difference between d2 and d2a in Oz was diff lock as stock. I have driven quite a few of each and there is nothing in it...really.

didnt the D2a come out with a bigger i/cooler and have more power from standard .
