TD5 Auto - Major issues with forward drive

    Hey all,

I've run into an issue where I've taken off in a bit of a hurry with the handbrake on - one of those pucker up moments where you just have to get out of dodge. It was on a fair incline. A huge clunk sounded through the drive train and now my forward drive is broken.
The engine revs/flares especially from a standstill and the trans just doesn't seem to lock up in forward gears to provide the normal level of acceleration. It appears to change between each gear smoothly or at least without clunks. In reverse it is fine, solid drive. The transmission also overheats after approximately 10min of regular suburb driving.
I serviced the trans myself less than 5000km ago, the car has an exhaust and chip on it. Approx 245** kms with no know trans rebuild history.
Not being familiar with auto specific issues brings me here. I rarely do the 'online mechanic' thing but while waiting for my regular shed space to free up, what does this sound like?

Have I done the ZF or just the torque converter?

    Thoughts appreciated.

Sounds like it could be the torque converter, have you done a stall test?. Problem is the debris going through the rest of the trans including the oil pump.

    Thanks for the reply Discorevy.

Haven't done stall test yet, I'll get in it when I get home. My only reservation about calling it the stally was the fact it completely behaves itself in reverse.
Read you loud and clear on the cross contamination.

If you put it 1st gear does it take off normal then select 2nd etc? could be the sprag clutch, by selecting 1st this also applies the clutch brake recommended when towing out of a steep boat ramp etc.
disco seriesII mods so far:-bullbar,hyd winch,
detriot locker, lsd front,C.D.L kit, chipped and bigger intercooler,2" lift, rock sliders, lsd in transfer case, modified auto trans.

Spot on Steve, sprag clutch it is. This would also line up with the method of failure.
I'm guessing transmission out on the bench to replace. Does RAVE cover this?

yep it is a tranny out job, with the K's on it might as well do the "A" clutch pack, cheap if you get parts from over sea's, I bought most of my parts from America, might have a clutch assembly in garage from left overs from when I did my tran's overhaul. only problem I am now living in Sydney.

Good advice. I'll map out my options and get back to you if I'm chasing that assembly, if you don't mind posting. I'll chuck in a Dan Murphys voucher too.
