Most people get a new genuine bolt that (now) comes with the appropriate threadlocker.

Which says to use Loctite 243 / STC50552,
243 is the medium (red) one.

The original spec was for a full syn, and IIRC the factory fill was a 5 or 10W-30.

The reason for that was that the only dual rated but petrol biased oils at the time that could go 20,000km were oils like Mobil 1, Castrol Formula R, etc.

Oil have improved exponentially in the intervening years, a semi-syn like Penrite's 5W-40 can easily go the 20,000km of the orginal oil change interval with reserves to spare in 'normal' use, and it possesses a much more robust anti-wear and detergent/dispersant package than any petrol biased full syn oil.

Obviously stop-start, short trip city driving in a hot Australian summer and that interval needs to come riiiight back.

I'm a little biased towards an xW-40 in the TD5 purely because of the load of the unit injectors on the cam lobes, and for this reason prefer an HDEO, ie. one that has an API CF-4+ or ACEA E4/E6 or better additive package.

Having said that IIRC Slunnie has used Mobil 1 0W-40 since forever, the engine is seriously tweaked and I don't think he's ever had an issue.

I use either Peneite Diesel5 semi synth or HPR5 full synth depending on which is on special when I'm stocking up on it...usually 20 litres at a go.
I change it with both filters every 10,000 and feel guilty that I'm not doing it every 5,000...but as I average over a thousand a week Ido t think it's too bad.
Currently doing atf every 20,000 too as it was looking a bit dark for my taste. I notice better shifts when it gets changed...

Just remember its a bastard to get a good seal on the sump gasket. I’ve done mine a few times and it still weeps oil. Make sure you don’t forget the two beads of sealant where there are joins on the motor.
