Con rod would bend befor a crank shaft and I don't even think a crank would 'bend'. If it hydraulic locked on engine oil from the turbo it would be easy to come to that conclusion through a intercooler full of oil. Either way sounds like they are throwing causes out of nowhere which is fine for them but costs you money. There's mechanics and then there's Land Rover specialist take it to a Land Rover mechanic
My RRC/TD5 suddenly developed a similar sound, but i took it straight to mechanic when it started.
Head off and one valve was just touching piston. You can see the slight indent/clean alloy impression in the piston. Sorry, too stunned and didn't take any pix.
Head about to be sent off to be skimmed and valve issue fixed (possibly broken spring - yet to be checked).
In the overall scheme of things, could have been worse.

The guy is a land rover specialist.. Starting to worry he's ripping me off but I'm stuck up north and he's in Perth with the car.
I could be wrong, but I thought the crank in the TD5 was cast, like most are. If so, then it won't be bent, as cast stuff doesn't bend. It is inherently brittle, and so it breaks instead. If it was forged, however, then it could bend, but it extremely hard to imagine the force required. They are pretty solid things. I'd get a second opinion.

From reading this you need another mechanic
This sort of diagnostic bs really seems too easy these days .
Come on a bent crank really![]()
Gavin ,that's bad luck , but if the head is off , cam carrier split and ready for the head shop I would think the problem should already have been found, especially if a broken spring.
I've seen a crank chewed up on a big end journal due to a bent rod but not bent crank
It is possible I've gotten mixed up on what he's meant, I'll have to pin him down next time I talk to him and get some clarity.. otherwise I'll get the brother in law to go have a look. Cheers guys will let you know how it plays out.
Is the mechanics name Kevin?
