I can't see how an impeller blade could get past the intercooler.
How did the first turbo fail?
Alright guys so..
I bought a TD5 a few weeks ago. Got to drive about 300kms before the turbo blew. The guy I bought of got me a secondhand turbo because he's a good bloke and we've changed that. I've had to leave with my brother and head back to work up north. He's changed the turbo and replaced the gaskets and it's making a clacking sound now. I noticed it start right around when the turbo went. We've checked injectors and just about anything else we can think of. A mobile mechanic has checked it and thinks so of the of turbo impeller has gotten stuck in a valve inside the engine. The next step apparently is take the head off to confirm.
Before we go doing that can anyone think of anything else to check or is that about the best bet from here? How likely is it a piece has gotten through the engine?
Getting frustrating because it's costing me more money every week and I'm paying a loan for a car a can't bloody drive..
Cheers,
John

If the oil ran low when the turbo went it could be a number of things , if your lucky it might be the rollers for the injectors, pull the rocker cover and check them for discoloration, out of roundness etc , while turning the engine over by hand .
I was driving along the highway about 100kmph and lost speed, starting blowing smoke, heard the clack and pulled straight over. Other than I moved it off the road. Can't see it losing all the oil that quickly..
even if it didn't lose all the oil , the pressure would be pretty low if the turbo seals blew, bits of the compressor wheel are highly unlikely to get in to the valves as kelvo mentioned.
I'm assuming you checked the oil level?
Yeah it's been fully topped up again. It lost a lot but there was still a fair bit in there..
Oil pump bolt?
Clacking could be the chain?

I thought I was wrong once, but I was mistaken.
Hi Paul,
The sound is coming more from the top of the engine from the passengers side. But we will have a look at the oil pump when we start taking it apart..
Thanks
Sounds like it's got a few K's up, a stuffed harmonic balancer will give you a clanking sound, but it's not at the the top of the motor thou.
