I don't think it is very common as I have never heard of it before.
The driveshaft would not drop as it is attached to the output shaft of the transfer. The drum is sandwiched between.

Hi, I bought my first Disco. It is a 2002 Disco 2 Td5. While we were changing fluids, we noticed a significant crack in the handbrake drum, it started at the center and finished at the outside edge. I also noticed that the handbag drum on this particular Disco 2 was made out of white metal that had clearly been cast. Had the crack given way, it would've been catastrophic because the driveshaft would have dropped those first into the ground in the direction of travel, and I don't know how fast the handbrake from revolves, but I'm imagining that centrifugal force would've been dangerous.
I then noticed that the Discovery 1 handbrake drum is a machined unit, heavier, and clearly much better made. A guy who was helping me service my Disco just happened to have one of the machined units sitting in his trailer ready to go to the scrapheap. We swapped them over, it was an exact fit, and I feel much better.
Has anybody else had problems with quality assurance for the cast unit of the Disco 2?

I thought all LR hand brake drums were cast iron to be honest like most brake drums (They certainly are on the Series III, 101 and Rangie. As mentioned, your driveshaft won't drop even if the drum detonated - you'd get a good scare for sure and who knows where the parts would be ejected to, but that's it. You'd be able to continue driving home afterwards as well, but not have a handbrake obviously.

As above - almost all modern (post 1920s) brake drums are cast iron, which may be only machined on working surfaces or may be machined all over. Cracks are very rare, and even when cracked, further damage is almost unheard of.
Transmission brake drums rotate at three or four times the speed of wheel brakes, so balance is more important, and vibration is going to be the principal symptom of a cracked drum.
I am guessing it is either faulty manufacture or has been overheated by using it as a service brake.

So D1 and D2 handbrake drums are interchangeable then without any other changes (different shoes, hole sizes, etc.)?
EDIT: Microcat lists the following:
D2:
D1:
FRC3502 - ЧЕРНЫЙ (DRUM-TRANSMISSION BRAKE BLACK)
- Замены
- SDC100200 - > СЕРЕБРЯННЫЙ (DRUM-TRANSMISSION BRAKE SILVER)Discovery Series II 1998-2004(1998 - 2004)/РАЗДАТОЧНАЯ КОРОБКА/TRANSMISSION BRAKE
NTC9859 - СЕРЕБРЯННЫЙ (DRUM-TRANSMISSION BRAKE SILVER)
- Замены
- SDC100200 - > СЕРЕБРЯННЫЙ (DRUM-TRANSMISSION BRAKE SILVER)Discovery Series II 1998-2004(1998 - 2004)/РАЗДАТОЧНАЯ КОРОБКА/TRANSMISSION BRAKE
SDC100200 - СЕРЕБРЯННЫЙ (DRUM-TRANSMISSION BRAKE SILVER)
So they must be compatible as the same part number is listed in both.
happened to me too, i mean cracked drum, i dont know what kind of metal was it cos my mechanic removed it ...i urgently ordered the x brake kit and didnt look back

Read all about the X Brake on the 90/110/130 board.
IMO drums make an excellent parking brake as they self energise, discs don't.![]()
