If anyone is having problems with their cruise control, before you go checking the vacuum and switches, check your brake lights.
Had an issue with the Cruise control not working driving back from NSW a couple of weeks ago and decided to track the problem over the weekend.
After checking the function of the switches and the vacuum system I noticed that my brake lights were on, permanently!
Took out the Brake switch and found the problem was the plunger has got pushed in a little too far, this switch has an auto adjusting plunger which you can pull out of the switch, and push back in, whilst doing this it should click a lot, and you should check that the resistance to being pushed is is greater than the spring resistance, otherwise you will need a new switch.
To fix the problem I just pulled the plunger out a little then refitted it into the socket letting the plunger get pushed back in the correct amount, if the plunger is already to short to get pushed in when refitting pull it out a little more.
Once refitted the brake lights now function correctly and I have cruise control back.
PS, it turns out I must have driven all the way back from NSW with the brake lights permanently on!
