    Discovery 2 Ignition key programing

    Good morning all,

I am new to diesels Discovery 2 and this Forum,

Is there anyone in Adelaide who can program new
    ignition keys?

Looking for a trustworthy independent LR mechanic in Adelaide.

Is the TD5 normally a noisy mechanicaly motor which quiet downs at bit when warmed up? Engine performs well. Do you need to warm up the engine when its cold?

Are there any recurring auto gearbox problems to look out for?

Has 346,000 on the odometer, is that a lot for this car?

Sorry for all the question but I am on a steep learning curve.

    Regards

    Russell.

    How you going!
Find a friendly member locally to program a new key with nanocom or similar. (Hint, I have a nanocom, so if you are near me then I could do it).

Lots of info on everything else here.
Autos depend on treatment - at 346K it might be getting long in the tooth, or perhaps its been driven nicely and serviced in which case not.

Like any older car, it would probably appreciate a bit of sensitive driving until oil pressure and warmed at least a bit. It's probably more important not to just turn it straight off but give it a 30second to a few minutes of idle after a run to allow cooling to continue and turbo to spool down. But that's true of any turbo diesel.

There are 2 reputable mechanics in Adelaide I believe, but can't recall their names (British 4wd ??)

Welcome to the forum and to the D2 adventure.

Mine clatters a fair bit and friends say they hear me leave Moe while they are in Traralgon. It makes a dead set racket compared to step son's Nissan. (The Nissan has no charisma. Not a shred.) I tend to drive mine pretty gently until the temp gauge starts heading out of the blue and up towards halfway. I usually wait for about 30 seconds or so from stop to turning it off.

Dunno about the auto - mine's a manual. If, and it's a big if, it's been well looked after it should be good.

Mine's got a bit over 390k km on it and it still goes well. Tows my 2t camper OK up hill and down dale. I just steer clear of 5th gear unless I'm on the flat or going down hill. There are other D2 Td5's around that have done a lot more k's than mine.

Sorry for all the question but I am on a steep learning curve.
    Aren't we all...??
The rule with Land Rovers in general is "from little things big things grow" meaning if you have a little issue deal with it pronto before it becomes a full blown production.
Be quite aggressive with servicing. Check seals, grease everything that can be greased regularly and keep up with all oils and filters - I change engine oil and filters at 10k intervals and drive line oils at 30k intervals.

I was lucky with mine - it came with a COMPLETE service and repair record. Even receipts, dates and mileages for wiper blades and various globes.

I reckon a D2 is a nice car to drive and we both reckon that it's comfortable and just a nice place to be. Fuel consumption is good at around 9.5l/100km on the highway without the camper and less than 14 with a 2t camper. It's a dead set paragon of reliability and I've not had a show stopper although a failing gearbox came close. Previous owner did a lot of heavy towing (horse floats) so fifth gear started making HORRIBLE noises. A rebuilt gearbox at about 340k km's and all's well again.
    Cheers,

Hello, and welcome. One or two MUSTS. Check the oil pump bolt. Plenty of threads on here about that. You simply cannot assume it has been done, it isn't hard to do, and the result of not checking can be catastrophic. I have been quoted $330 to do it. I am comfortable doing it myself, but for that price...

Check the injector loom, and factor it into your regular servicing schedule. Plenty of threads on here about that as well.

Check, or have a mechanic check, the exhaust manifold. They have a habit of warping, and breaking studs. Once again, plenty of threads.

346.000 isn't all that much for a D2 TD5. I would imagine the auto may have been done in that time, but maybe not. I would recommend budgeting to get an additional oil cooler for it, as they don't really hold enough oil for proper cooling in my view.

IMO, the D2 TD5 is a thoroughly enjoyable car, and is extremely capable. Enjoy it.

Don't apologise for asking questions, Russell. The only stupid question is the one you didn't ask.
