Thread: HELP!!!!! Please.

I tried to take it all apart this morning but as it was jambed solid I had to cut it in two and buy another shaft.
This new one slides easily on the spline and only took half an hour to install.

I have got it back together. I had to smash the shaft on the floor to get the spline to move on the last 40 mm. I then fitted the doughnut and diff end bolts loosley and got the handbrake drum end to slip over the studs.
I then did up the BD end tight fitted the bolts through the doughnut and then had to use a 4 lb. mash hammer to drive the shaft back towards the doughnut till it all matched up.
I would have thought this shaft should slide freely in the splines should it not?

Hi, this is not the sort of job to be using percussive maintenance techniques...

As it had the studs on the back of the hand brake drum and the spigot on the diff end and it would not slide , cutting was the only option.
I picked up another good used shaft from Hunter and Cutthill in Geelong for not much money.
That new one slides like silk and it seems most of my vibrations are a thing of the past.
It is odd that it seized up as it was greased as should be.

The problem arises from greasing the slider joint without compressing the driveshaft. It's easy to fill the void with grease when the driveshaft is extended and the grease to harden in there.

It happened to me way back in 1985 when driving from Riyadh to Amman. I found a workshop in Amman and we undid the driveshaft and compressed it several times until it slid smoothly. Vibration gone.

So to ensure it doesn't happen you should undo one end and compress the driveshaft before greasing, but hey who on earth does that.
So be careful to put only a little bit of grease in.
