    Smile LRT-60-009 ACE special tool

Hi guys, I am about to replace both ACE actuators on my Disco 2.
The manual states that I need a special tool to remove the nut on the end of the actuator rod.
They cost between $70 and $400 depending where you look.
This is just a note to say that there is a way to make your own tool.
    I made one this morning.

I had to sacrifice a 7/8" ring spanner and an 18mm 1/2 SD socket.
I welded the socket into the ring spanner. I then drilled through the centre of the socket to 13mm.

I got a M12 x 80mm bolt, and cut off the threaded section.
Then with a hacksaw and a file, I cut a slot into the shaft of the bolt to accommodate the end of the actuator rod.
Using a 19mm ring spanner to hold the slotted tool that holds the actuator shaft, the socket/spanner tool easily undoes the nut.
I was even able to torque the nut with a normal socket on completion.

So good news. Repco are selling out of Kingcrome tools atm. and I have a shinny new 18mm socket and a very nice 24mm Spanner. better news is as I was preparing to weld my new purchases together I stumbled on the Sthil chainsaw tool called a Number 5. Turns out its an 18mm tube and fits the actuator nut perfectly. Now to cut a slot in the bolt i have and get this job done. Kingcromes in the Randoms toolbox to live another day.

Would be even easier to get a Bolt-Thru/Pass-Thru/Go-Thru style socket set. They use a spline drive with a centre hold so that the extended thread can go through the middle, or in this case, you can access a second piece. Would mean you have a ratchet mechanism to make it even easier.

Yep I thought about that but this is in the shed so count it as free.

If you get a chance while dismantling it to replace, can you see if you can find the 'easiest' way to access the boot? Mine work fine with no leaks but I need to replace the front ones boot as noticed a small tear in it while doing the brakes the other day. I've got a set of pass through sockets so will use those with a 6mm slotted bolt through them to undo the top nut. The bottom however looks like the bolts been fitted from the chassis side so does the whole bar assembly need to be dropped down then in order to remove it?

I can confirm the Sthil tube spinner and bolt with a short slot cut in it worked well. I’d recommend a high tensile bolt mine kept opening up on me.
