    Leaking td5 transfer case

Is it worth putting a stop leak additive in my leaky transfer case or is it snake oil?

Stop leak is usually just a seal swelller, it softens elastomers so it's only a temporary solution and may make things worse by softening the seals that aren't leaking and they may wear faster....

It all depends where the TC is leaking. If the shaft seals are old and hardened (but not cracked) stop leak may do the trick Can be a very good product if used correctly, can be very effective on rear main and timing cover seal leaks.
It won't help if the cover plate seal is leaking or oil is wicking down the cover bolts or if the intermediate shaft 'hole' is enlarged.
Finding out where the oil is coming from is the first step.

Common places the LT230 leak from are the felt seals around the output flanges (easy fix), o-ring on intermediate shaft (often a difficult problem to solve as the case can be out of round where the shaft seats), bottom plate and 3 of the bolts that hold the transfer case onto the auto / man are not sealed from the inside, so if they are loose they will leak.

While stop leak does work on other things, I don't think it will work on an LT230 for the above reasons. Unless you are lucky enough to have only a hard intermediate shaft o-ring.

Just leave it be for a year and perhaps it will stop leaking. Mine did. Go figure....

Being too miserable to spend serious money I have been topping it up regularly and before particularly long trips. Now no drips on the drip tray and can't top up. Getting close to 300K.

Mine started leaking after I changed the oil, and no it's not coming from the filler hole. I had the intermediate shaft hole fixed previously as it was out of round and seriously leaking (cost around $2K), I reckon it would have been empty after 2000-3000 KM. The new leak is minor and I'm just going to see how it goes.
