    TD5 External Oil Filter Installation

    Hi,

I am fitting an external oil filter and I was wondering if anyone knows if there is an existing port somewhere on the block that I can utilise for the return line?

I am fitting a T-piece to the oil switch feed for a pressure feed to the filter, I just need a tidy way of connecting the return line. Hopefully this will be the end of my oil changes!

I have already welded a T on the oil return pipe from the turbo and used it to connect my provant filter of the rocker cover - I am a little hesitant to also use this for the return line of my external oil filter as I'm not sure of the flow rate or the pressure coming out of the external filter.

One solution is to fit an elbow to the oil filler cap - does anyone know if a metal/aluminium oil filler cap are available after market for the TD5? Perhaps I could drill and tap it and fit an elbow!

    Thanks

Mate why? The td5 has one of the best oil filtration systems going around. So not needed.

Buzzweld Auto Coatings in the UK make alloy caps for the 300 Tdi, but can't see them for the TD5.

But everyone is curious as to why you don't want to change your oil any longer .. or exactly what you mean by that comment.

    Very definitely not needed.

See why - 4 mins from the end.

Its not a dirty old Toyota engine that needs an oil change every 5000 km.

The TD5 is one of the best designed diesels of its time with the injectors lasting the life of the engine and oil changes needed much less often.

if you're desperate to do some engine mods, remove the egr, remap the engine ecu and that's it!
    Cheers

FWIW you will still experience additive depletion, regardless of how 'clean' you can maintain a sump of oil.
The furthest large trucks go is 100,000km or so on an oil change, and they have much larger stumps and use top up oil to prevent additive depletion.
TBN will eventually reach 0, oxidation levels will climb and even with bypass filtration (and the TD5 has an excellent bypass filter already) won't remove all the soot, so soot levels will eventually exceed a reasonable condemnation limit.

I have already done those mods a long time ago.

I am not asking for peoples opinion on whether I should fit an external filter or not, I have already made that choice!

As stated I am asking if anyone knows of an existing port in the block, or other method, that could be used for the return line.

For those of you that are not educated on the subject I purchased the filter kit when I was in States a few months back direct from the manufacture at half the price of what you can buy it in Australia and I purchased the 150,000 mile diesel kit, which is the recommended millage to change the oil after fitting the filter. I have used these kits before many years ago and they work! I was put onto them in the 80's (and they have been around much longer than that) by an oil testing lab in Rocklea who tested oils for Grayhound bus company and many other major players in the diesel engine industry. However I am not trying to convince anyone, I'm just asking for some help.

I think I know which filter kit type you're referring too.

.. each to their own I guess .. but Ricks comment should be taken more seriously than just a passing glance.
Oil will look nice and clean at 150K klms, but it's ability to lubricate will be severely diminished long before that.

I remember my dad use one of those external filter contraptions on his '67 Cadillac and basically killed it after a couple of years.
Saved himself about 4 oil changes(in todays money that'd be around $200-300 or so) ... but cost him in a few K's in an engine rebuild instead!

5000km on the old Toyota engines unless extreme service, which includes stop / start traffic, as well as 4wding. If extreme then every 2500km. 10 and 5 for their newer engines. TD5 is 20 and 10.
