Unplug the MAF first and see if it improves.
Dear Forum members
I have a 2001 Discovery 2 4.0 V8 with Thor Engine. The car drives beautifully normally but recently it's displaying various symptoms to indicate something is wrong. These symptoms are:-
Stops after idling for few minutes
misfires under load at and over 3500 rpm
I have purchased a iCarsoft LR V 1.0 OBD reader and the only code error it gave me was that there is an issue with the MAF sensor.
However other threads indicate possibly failing ignition coils and or even problems with the HT leads to the plugs.
Noting that the car has ben serviced regularly, has 200K on the clock and uses almost no oil and has new spark plugs. Can anybody help me with a possible diagnosis (or similar experience) before I start on a process of elimination by changing a whole bunch of parts.
Regards
John R

Thanks
Will do and let you know on Monday
It could be a fuel issue, failing fuel pump or dirty fuel filter (this is in the fuel tank) as what you are describing sounds like the engine is "Starving" for fuel.

Your probably right but it doesn't cost any time or money to pull the MAF plug.

The good news is no lying on your back under the vehiclebut you are lying across the top of the motor.LOL
Deano, and the bad news is the coil packs are jammed so close to the rear of the firewall there is little room to get your fingers in there, they are a mongrel of a job. even worse if you have lpg fitted as extra stuff to reove to get the intake off.
Sounds like spark rather than fuel to me. Why would fuel pressure drop after ‘idling for a few minutes’?
Is it time related or heat related?
Does it run for a few minutes, restart ok, run again for a few minutes, stop again?
Or does it run, stop, then nothing for some other length of time?
Check battery connections and all main earths.
Coil packs would likely surface as a misfire first above idle, then deteriorate into a weak idle.
Similar for leads, though unlikely several would fail together.
Unplug the MAF.
If no result, change coils and leads. If you intend on doing another 200,000, I’d relocate the coils. They are an absolute ball-ache.
Crank angle sensor is another candidate, though usually they just die outright. Splutter, splutter, stall, no start. Not too difficult to change though.
