    Oil Overfill

    Hi guys,

Just attempted an oil change on my new (new to me anyway) td5 disco. On my previous car you had to check oil after running it for a bit which is what i did. I kept topping up until it was near the full marker but only ever with a warm engine.

Doing some reading on here everyone seems to suggest checking oil level on a cold. Checked it cold and it is slightly maybe 5mm over.

Should i be getting the excess out? Why is a cold engine a more accurate level?

    Cheers

I wouldn't worry about 5mm over when cold

Warm would usually be engine just run, cold engine would have most of the oil drained back into the sump

I have a jar with measurements and put the amount in and start the car. I let it idle maybe 5 mins then switch it off, while its off i clean up, pack tools away then check the level. Pretty much always right. I then leave it and check it the next morning and its still the same.

Cold oil would be accurate due to the engine not running and all the oil is down in the sump whereas if you run then switch it off then check it oil is still around the engine. That is why i leave it sit for a bit and let it drain back down

X2 5mm is nothing. Are you checking when the car is level?

If you are very worried I have fixed an overfill before with a brake bleeding vacuum pump, reservoir and a length of 4 mm polyurethane tube down the dipstick pipe.

As with most Landrovers the extra 5mm will usually end up leaking out onto the carport floor anyway
