    Fuel Gauge Playing Up - Sender?

    Hey guys, hope you're all well.

    All off a sudden my fuel gauge in my 2003 Disco Td5, started to take around 200km to deflect from the F when I fill up. The tank runs out on 1/4, which has left us stranded twice now. Is this a common issue for the disco? Is it most likely to be a crappy connection/wiring issue or the sender unit itself? Where is the sender located?

    Have you tried taking the truck off road on a few rough tracks?
    This may fix the problem as it sounds like the float in the tank is sticking and the jolting/sloshing may loosen if for you

    The sender unit is attached to the fuel pump module and is accessible from under the load area carpet via a small hatch in the floor. I'd be buying a new quality pump assembly off Roverlord and keeping the old one as a backup.

    Are you suggesting buying a new fuel pump to fix the fuel level issue?

    Well yeah, but of course you could just yank the pump assembly and clean or replace the sender if its available separately. Both pumps and senders wear out, maybe the pump's getting old too. Murphy's Law suggests having a spare pump nearby protects new one from sudden death, too.

    The issue may be the earthing of the gauge. This can be tested by switching the ignition on, wait until the gauge is steady, the switch on the lights, wait a few minutes. The gauge reading should remain exactly the same. If it changes, it means the gauge is behaving as if it is voltage sensitive. While it is possible that the gauge is, more likely is that the earth on the gauge or possibly the whole instrument cluster, is faulty.

    This test is not 100% sure, but pretty good. Not good if the earth connection is sometimes there and sometimes not!
