S and M lights. Limp mode. Discovery 2002 TD5. Need help please guys.

Hi Guys. Need your help again. This time for my sons Discovery2 2002 TD5. This is whats happening:

The 2 lights on the dashboard (S and M) are flashing and it appears to have put the Beast into Limp Mode.
So far, i read that oil can follow the wire loom and end up in the connections to the ECU and could cause the problem. I have thoroughly cleaned the connections, reset the fault codes for the 2 lights using Torque and a OBD2 Elm Bluetooth device. This worked for about 5 min then the lights came on again. I have just tried it again and it appears to not be in limp mode but the S and M lights are still flashing. Cant work it out.

    Can anybody help??
Have a beaut day - Gerry

Check the battery charge. The one I'm fixing for SWMBO has a suspect battery, and every time it gets a bit low, the m&s lights come up. That, or check ATF level in the trans. That can trigger it as well.

I had this problem. With me it turned out to be the wiring loom rubbing on the a/c compressor. The a/c rubbed/melted through the insulation and caused it to short out intermittently. I insulated the damage then wrapped the entire loom with silicon tape. So far I haven’t had any issues. Hopefully that’s your issue too, but it’s a good idea to service your trans just in case

XYZ switch could be another culprit. But check for oil in the loom first.

Is the Disco an Auto? If so, is "D" flashing on the dash too?

If so, it could be that you've got some water in your XYZ switch. This is likely caused by the AC drain dripping onto the switch. Wait for it to dry out and if everything looks good after that just get underneath and extend the drain hose so it no longer drains on to the XYZ switch.

    s & m lights , limp mode

Check for the red lights on the "t" bar if reverse or any other red light is not working when selected & the M & S lights are on, it's the inhibitor switch . That's what happen to my td5. If this is the case you can remove the switch ( external on selector shaft at LH side of auto ) drill out the rivets that hold it together with 4 mm drill, you will find that one or two of the metal contacts has dropped down on the plastic moving arm & not touching the fixed contacts in the selector housing, bend up the low ones & clean all, reassemble with new 4mm bolts & lock nuts, - russdog

The easyest way to a conclusion is to read the fault code... those OBD2 tools might give you false ones though

You may find it handy to have a read of Auto M + S Error Code P0705 Position Switch Monitoring caused when underbody wet - might not be the same cause but it's a common fault on the automatic vehicles after years of rubbing.
