It sounds like you still have air in the system, The same thing happened to my D2a after I had the head gaskets done.
A flush of the heater matrix fixed it![]()
Hi All.
I am trying to ensure the cooling system has no airlocks after the head rebuild, I bled the system today with the coke bottle in the tank and extended tube in the bleed hole and squeezed every hose i could reach.
I then put the aircon temps to 28 deg. and push the button with the front windscreen symbol in, then took it for a run, engine temps reach 90 deg but the windscreen vents were still cold.
Have i done this step right? as i cannot make much sense out of the handbook on how to just have the heater working, it could be 32deg outside temp wont let it.
BTW the thermostat is 20k old, the radiator is 10k old, i can't stop the fan when hot or cold but it doesn't go loose shortly after start up like i have read they should do and the pump seems strong
I Had a run to Brisbane [33deg outside] on the w/e the temps spiked quickly to 98deg from 90 to 92deg on 2 hills and a run up Mount Coot-tha, they are hardly big climbs so i want to check everything for a possible cause.
Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks

with the standard thermostat, 98 would be fairly common,, I saw 106 one day just driving down main street in Toowoomba...
do your research here, and change the thermostat.
could be mud in the AC cooler,, could be mud in the standard trans cooler, could be bloody great spotlights in front of the grill,
could be a clogged rad or air still in the system...
lots of ways to run hot,,

I dont know any coke bottle trick but the correct way is to lift the tank above the bleed hole when you fill the system with bleed screw removed then when coolant comes out there refit partially the bleed screw start the engine and keep it rev'd at 2000rpm untill no bubbles are coming near the screw then tighten it, put back the reservoir and tighten it's cap to maximum allowed... IMO that's the best method ever

Oh, how I chortled after I read that![]()
The front windscreen symbol is to defrost the windscreen, it does this by going full on air con to push the driest air possible to screen. That will also be air con dried air![]()
The heater has *no* effect on bleeding the disco systems as the cores are full flow all the time.
As said, lift the header tank up and see if it burps. But I reckon it's PEBCAK and RTFM :-)
Thanks for the replies.
I just lifted the tank although the coolant was full to the bleeder, went for a 10k drive this morning the heater warmed up with 27deg outside temp. with the coolant upto 92 on easy running. [ heater was cool at 33deg O/temp yesterday so it might effect the heaters operation].
I have no wooshing or gurgling from the heater so i am confident that there is no airlock.
The wagon has a genuine chunky rubber bullbar with spotties so i'll pull that off for a test, then new thermostat if that doesn't return a result.
Did a lot of research today , one chap is getting to 110 deg on 40+ days and is not that worried, I know i am being pedantic about this temperature but a lot of others are running around with cooler temps and i want to be one of them.
I want to tow a 2 ton van with this Disco so about 4Deg cooler would be great.
Thanks again.
I changed a few words on my searches which opened up a lot more posts than the other day, I have a full understanding on what's going on with the thermostat now, so i'm sleeping at night again.![]()
Hi,
Couldn't see if TD5 or V8?
Have you looked into the "american" (if V8?) mod for the top hose inline thermostat?
The post I've read are getting good results from this change to the system.
If Td5 you could change for a lower rated thermostat? not sure on the merits of this as i'm running a standard in my TD5 and when I've been monitoring the highest I've seen is 96.
Cheers Lemo
