Baja Racks, Prices, where to get??

Posted this on the facebook page with no luck, was hoping someone here could help. Anyone know where to get these baja racks or something really similar cheaper? Custom fabricators? These are steel but if someone could knock up an ally one that would be even better (depending on cost i would like either steel or ally but would prefer ally)

Baja oz want $2700 dollary doos.. hezus wept!!!

    Plus freight.
AFAIR we used to sell them (Bajaracks Australia) at about $1900 at 1AUD =1.10 USD, so probably not too far off.
The freight will be a killer also.
Baja racks US treat overseas importers just like US dealers. The racks are made in Ensenada in Baja California (Mexico) so should not go up proportionate to the USD , but follow the AUD Mex peso exchange rate , but they don't.

Ok, should I be looking for Mexican Importers then? They are $1600 AUD in the US (+ whatever the freight would be) but I can't find a site that ships them. I can actually only find two places that sell them on the net. Baja oz and a company in California (which don't ship). Maybe Baja oz has stitched us all up?

Update: Have found more US suppliers. Have emailed them about shipping. Prices varied from $1080 US to $1500 US before shipping. Will update when I get some more info back from them. Anyone know what customs might charge? Cheers

Just for info, IMHO the D1 and D2 racks are not the best design around.

They have fixed feet which have no adjustment at all. Discos are sometimes not exactly the same.

We had a rack break in NT because it was under stress because the roof did not match the feet. Cost a bomb to have it fixed under warranty in Alice.

You would have to make sure that you shimmed under the feet so that all of the feet sit correctly and equally in the gutter.

The one that broke was at an aboriginal settlement and was on corrugations all the time so that may have been a factor.

Have you checked out Voyager Racks (the renamed Rover Racks mob as they not have offerings for other brands too) - Land Rover Discovery Series 2 Roof Racks — Voyager Racks

I ended up going with one of there Standard Voyager < Land Rover Discovery Series 2 Standard Voyager Roof Rack — Voyager Racks > models many years ago. Sourced it from someone in South Australia (maybe Pinnacle Rover or something like that?). They had imported in a container load of them. If I could go back I would get the Low Profile or Off Road Challenger versions rather.

At $899.00 USD maybe you will be able to source and land it for cheaper. Remember though to budget + 15% to cover import duties and GST.

I mention it as originally I purchased a Baja Rack from the Australian distributor before going with the Voyager. They failed to ever deliver it. The saga dragged on for months before I finally managed to get a full refund.

    Thank you, very helpful.

I looked at them, they look almost the same. They had an overland one that was the best. I don’t want the front to be quite that big for wind resistance and i’m not a fan of that look they’re made for big lights and if i did end up putting on lights i’d want the lower profile small ones. also the low profile ones step in too much before they go up, reducing load space. The prices are about the same. I’m still waiting to hear back from some other suppliers for the baja

A place in NYC has them the cheapest. Shipping will be a bit longer from there but easy for them to get it to a boat. Hope they email me back. Would be close to a grand cheaper than baja oz all up, crazy to me to try and sell a rack for that much, for an older car. Surely they could be more competitive!!? (And organised by the sound of it, they are an authorised dealer after all)

Hopefully you'll all over it already, but having imported a few big things now I thought I'd run the calculations over your situation quickly. Not sure on your maths and quotes to be able to find a spare grand in it...

The Baja Racks are listed as $1,300.00 USD in the USA < Baja Rack: racks_list > (even more at $1,380.00 if you want the Standard Basket Rack - not sure which version you are considering). That converts to close to $1,700.00 AUD at current rates taken from XE < XE - The World's Trusted Currency Authority: Money Transfers & Free Exchange Rate Tools > (I usually find these to be accurate). Then plus 15% to cover GST and import duties = $1,955.00 AUD just to purchase it (less obviously if they're doing a sale discount price for you). So without accounting for shipping fees there's not a spare $1,000.00 AUD between the two - closer to $745.00 AUD price difference without freight...

Not sure what amounts the quotes you've received for freight are, but with the above it would need to be under $745.00 AUD to make it worthwhile, thats including GST and import duties which will be applied to the freight too. So when import duties and GST are taken off and the remainder is converted to USD it equates to about $490.00 USD - any higher than that and would be cheaper to just purchase through Baja Rack Australia at the $2,700.00 AUD price.

Then you'll also incur the custom lodgement fees - $90.00 fee for self lodgement or $77.00 for a service such as eCustoms Broker < Australia’s #1 AusPost Customs Broker | 3hr Service | Submit Online >.

Anyways, good luck with. They look like a nice rack so hopefully it all works out well for you and cheaper!

Thanks for the extra info. I did say close to a grand it was a rough count up.

    Found a place that quoted 1360AUD for rack, 460 AU (60kg 2400 x 1500 x 130) for shipping, GST + 5% would be 200 ish. I had it at $1860 but forgot gst and 5%

    Still lots cheaper

I’m still waiting to hear back so it may be a fizzer. I think it’s still the weekend there (kinda) so maybe i’ll hear back tonight/tomoz

Close to 2.2k all up. Still exy. Was going to hit up some custom fab shops up and keep the money over here. I have no idea how much it would cost for that. I saw a post on here from 2012ish and old mate got one knocked up that was pretty good for 1.2k.
