    Discovery 2 CV Remove

    Hi, quick question, i have the axle out with the CV but how do i remove it from the axle? The knuckle part? As the Circlip is holding it in?
    Also can i use hose clamps to secure the gator back on?

    Open vice to allow axle to drop through.

    Place something suitable below so axle doesn’t hit concrete.

    Hold CV above vice about 15cm...

    Drop!

    Axle will pop from the CV

    I got it off, just wondering how can you tell when the CV is cooked?, As took the other off and what i should be looking for?

    CVs last for ever if the rubber boot is OK. Obviously no grease then rust and lots of wear etc etc.

    However if the car has been abused look for cracks in the CV cage, balls that are not there, or for less catastrophic damage ridges in the grooves that the balls run in.

    As Philip said, the big thing is cracks in the cage.

    Reassemble dry and turn and rotate to check for tighteness, etc.

    A FWIW, when new the things are stupid tight. I used to modify the cages and races on race car CV's to improve plunging

    Use a really good moly fortified grease at reassembly, ideally something with a Timken OK load rating above 75lb/35kg

    OK, as this CV was clicking on and off when offroad so i changed it,

    But does anyone have an link for good grease from supercheap? As what band clamps do i need to use?

    Is it suppose to be an little be tight whilst moving the joint around?

    Try autobarn, bursons and repco too .. as alternatives to supercheap.

    You can get CV boot clips, used them on my Rodeo once .. easy-ish to do.
    They're like a worm drive clamp, but you bend the end over and fold it over again .. or something like that.

    Grease will be obvious at any of those stores .. just ask.
    Penrite have a 100g(toothpaste type tube ) CV joint grease .. SCA seem to stock most Penrite products.

    Whilst on the topic of grease.
    Does it pay to renew the grease in the CV joints as a service item.

    eg. D2 has done 300+K klms, no idea if the CV joints have been changed/service/etc.
    Is it worth the effort to regrease them, or does the grease have an extremely long life?
